Financing will be provided for Türkiye's Second Irrigation Modernization and Water Efficiency Project.

It was reported that the World Bank Board of Directors approved the financing of 819 million USD to be provided for the "Türkiye Second Irrigation Modernization and Water Efficiency Project".

In the statement, it was emphasized that Turkey is a country under water stress, where 85% of Turkey's existing water resources are consumed by the agricultural sector, and it was also underlined that this situation is predicted to become even more negative in the coming years.

Despite this situation, it was stated that the irrigation systems in Turkey are largely inefficient and that in most cases there is an irrigation infrastructure based on open channels, which causes water losses due to leakage and evaporation. It was stated that the project to be carried out is a continuation of a previous program aimed at modernizing the irrigation infrastructure and water distribution systems for the purpose of saving water.

According to the statement, it is aimed to benefit at least 50 thousand farms and a total of 550 thousand people by reducing water loss in transportation and in-field irrigation, increasing crop production and food accessibility, and increasing the resilience of agricultural production to extreme weather events, with the project to be carried out in regions affected by increasingly worsening climatic conditions such as extreme heat, drought and flood.

In addition, according to the statement, work continues on the Irrigation Modernization Project and the Turkey Water Circularity and Efficiency Improvement Project, developed by the World Bank for Turkey.

World Bank Turkey Country Director Humberto Lopez, whose evaluation was included in the statement, pointed out that Turkey ranks ninth in the world in the production of agricultural products and that the agricultural sector constitutes 6% of the Turkish economy and has a 20% share in employment.

Humberto Lopez continued his words as follows;

"The need to take a comprehensive approach to water efficiency is not just a climate change issue, but also an economic challenge to protect the sector and increase employment in agriculture. The World Bank is pleased to support efforts that will help save water, increase resilience, increase agricultural productivity and production, and protect rural livelihoods."
