The 2024 Turkey Results of the environmental reporting platform CDP, whose Turkey studies are undertaken by the Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum, were announced on May 16 at the CDP Turkey 15th Climate Change and Nature Conference: 2024 Results and Award Ceremony. CDP Turkey 2024 Climate Change and Nature Report, which includes the analyzes and findings of CDP Turkey for 2024, which carries out its activities in Turkey under the main sponsorship of Garanti BBVA, and CDP Global Leaders, determined according to CDP's Global Rating Methodology, were announced to the public during the event.
25 Thousand Companies Worldwide Announced Their Environmental Data
In 2024, CDP transformed its reporting structure by combining the Climate Change, Deforestation and Water Security question sets into a single, integrated Corporate Question Set. Plastics and biodiversity were treated as independent theme areas for the first time, while a new dedicated SME Question Set for small businesses was also included in the reporting process. While approximately 25,000 companies around the world disclosed their environmental data through CDP, 138 companies from Turkey reported. Compared to the previous year, the number of companies reporting in Turkey increased by 21% in the field of climate change, 65% in the field of water security and 220% in the field of deforestation.
Reporting in Turkey is Intensive on Climate Change
According to the report; The majority of companies reporting to CDP from Turkey integrate environmental risks and opportunities into high-level governance and strategic decision-making processes. But this progress has been largely concentrated on climate change issues, disproportionate to other reporting themes. While a moderate level of institutional maturity is observed in the field of water security, this level remains quite low in other environmental themes such as deforestation, plastics and biodiversity. To achieve balance in reporting, companies need to more strongly integrate nature-based issues into their governance, strategy and performance measurement systems.
Nature-Based Topics Do Not Find Enough Coverage
According to the report; While 98% of companies take responsibility for climate change at the board level, 93% stated that their boards of directors have climate competence. Additionally, 78% of companies reported that they tied the compensation of senior executives to the achievement of climate goals. However, nature-based issues cannot find enough space in corporate governance structures and incentive systems.
Systemic Risks Due to Water Stress Are Very Common
In 2024, awareness and management capacity of water risks among companies in Turkey increased significantly. The number of companies reporting to CDP within the scope of water security increased by 65% in one year. Looking at the reports, it was seen that systemic risks caused by water stress were quite common. While 66% of the companies state that they draw water from basins under stress, 72% of the facilities are directly located in these high-risk areas.
Only 30% of Companies Have a Target to Prevent Deforestation
As of 2024, it is seen that companies reporting from Turkey have started to map plastic use throughout the supply chain and set targets in this area. However, practices such as recycling, reuse and circular product design are quite limited. 40% of companies have targets to reduce the use of plastic raw materials and increase recyclability. 47% have mapped plastic use across their operations and supply chain. According to the report, only 30% of companies have a goal of preventing deforestation. While 70% have established a traceability system in their supply chain, only 10% reported that they actively monitor whether the products they supply actually meet these criteria.
All Reporting Companies Apply Systematic Processes
92% of companies reporting from Turkey have fully mapped their value chains or have started this process. Nearly all companies (98%) report implementing systematic processes to identify and manage environmental dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. 80% of companies use scenario analysis for climate change and 55% for water security. This rate is only 2% for deforestation. 59% of companies expect to be covered by carbon pricing systems within the next three years. 44% have already transformed their investment, expenditure and income planning in parallel with their climate transition strategies.
The Changing Role of Institutions in the Sustainability Reporting Ecosystem
The panel titled Strengthening Interoperability in the Transforming Reporting Ecosystem, moderated by Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum Director Ata Can Bertay; EBRD Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance Manager Rachael Barza, GRI Strategic Communications Head Cristina Gil White and CDP Europe Engagement Manager Benan Ürgün attended. The changing role of institutions in the sustainability reporting ecosystem, which has been rapidly transforming in recent years, and how to work together more effectively in this new order were discussed in the panel.
CDP rated over 22,700 companies worldwide this year; Only 2% of these companies earned the highest rating of “A”. 28 companies from Turkey were included in the group by entering CDP's Global A List.
