Karşıyaka Municipality was entitled to receive the 'Zero Waste Basic Level Certificate' for the first time in history among all public and private institutions in Izmir.
08 Mar 2021Within the scope of the work carried out by the Environmental Protection and Control Directorate, Karşıyaka Mayor Mr. Cemil TUGAY gathered together all his stakeholders, including the ÇEVKO Foundation.
Karşıyaka Municipality, the amount of waste recycled and recovered in the last year exceeding approximately 21,000 tons, contributes to the environment and economy by collecting packaging waste, waste glass, waste vegetable oil, waste battery, textile waste, electrical and electronic waste, bulky waste, expired medicines, stale bread separately at the source and preventing all kinds of waste from being mixed into the garbage.
WHAT DOES KARŞIYAKA DO ABOUT WASTE MANAGEMENT?
The activities carried out by Karşıyaka Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Directorate to prevent waste, use natural resources more efficiently, minimize waste generation and recycle household waste are as follows:
• Established for the first time in the Aegean Region by Karşıyaka Municipality, '1. Class Waste Retrieval Center was put into operation with the permission of the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization dated 01/07/2016, and thanks to the facility, tons of waste are recycled every year. In the facility located in Latife Hanım District; Paper and cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, wood, textile products, batteries, oil, electronics, fluorescent lamps, pharmaceuticals and rubber waste are collected and delivered to a licensed recycling company.
• Depending on Karşıyaka Municipality's 1st Class Waste Bringing Center; There are also five "Mobile Waste Collection Centers" in Mavişehir neighborhood, in front of Egepark AVM parking lot, in Zübeyde Hanım neighborhood, opposite 100. Yıl Park, in front of Karşıyaka Çarşı entrance, İşbank, next to Bahçelievler Storey Market, and in Örnekköy neighborhood, Başpehlivan Statue Square. Seven different types of waste are collected in mobile centers: paper and cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, electronics, used vegetable waste oil and batteries. Karşıyaka residents can leave their waste in the specified groups to the main facility or mobile centers. Mobile Waste Collection Centers will be located in all neighborhoods in the district.
• In Karşıyaka, the source-separated waste collection system, which aims to recycle packaging wastes without mixing with the garbage, is implemented by our citizens in front of buildings in Bostanlı, Bahçelievler, Bahriye Üçok, Aksoy neighborhoods, and by collecting them from the site settlements at determined times twice a week in Mavişehir, Yalı, Mustafa Kemal, İnönü, Zübeyde Hanım, Latife Hanım, Atakent and Örnekköy neighborhoods.
In addition, as of February, a total of 127 blue recycling containers have been placed in the independent residential area of Atakent neighborhood and other neighborhoods, which started in 2020, and the packaging waste thrown into the Blue containers by our citizens is collected by our Municipality three days a week. We continue to explain our collection system by meeting face to face with households and tradesmen in all neighborhoods. In this context, brochures were distributed and stickers indicating the collection day and time of the area were affixed to each apartment entrance. We will continue to position containers as our citizens' use of these containers for their intended purpose, the amount of separation of packaging waste, their participation and demand increases.
As Karşıyaka Municipality, we add value to our national economy by recycling the packaging waste that our people separate and accumulate at home, while protecting the ecosystem and the resources of our future generations.
In addition, the packaging wastes generated in the markets established in our district are collected separately and recycled, and the organic market wastes, together with the landscaping wastes collected throughout the district, are used in the production of soil improvers and fertilizers in the Compost Facility of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.
Also, on 07/05/2018, BOZCAHAN Gerilojis Nakliye San. and Tic. Ltd. Ltd. A 5-year tender contract has been signed with (Contractor), and within the scope of the contract, recyclable waste from shopping malls, banks, health institutions, supermarkets, official institutions and market tradesmen within the district borders are collected by the relevant company.
• Glass waste; Waste glass packaging is collected and recycled with a total of 300 glass bins located at different points in Karşıyaka.
• Waste oils; If left to the muhtars' offices, five masks are given as a gift for every 3 liters, and waste oil is collected from the homes of those who collect 5 liters or more. Apart from this, waste oils can also be left in the municipality building and facilities. Waste oil collection bins are left at the sites, and a cleaning cloth is given as a gift to each site that collects 3 liters of oil.
• For waste batteries, there are waste battery collection boxes in schools, headmen's offices, supermarkets, shopping malls, health institutions, neighborhood centers, mosques, protected sites, relevant workplaces and municipal facilities.
• Textile waste is collected from 165 textile waste bins in suitable locations, headmen's offices and, if requested, from homes. Additionally, old beds, quilts and carpets are taken from homes upon request.
• Waste medicine collection containers have been placed in 25 family health centers for expired medicines and our citizens can throw their expired medicines into these containers. These wastes are disposed of in accordance with the legislation.
• Expired, faulty or idle electronic waste found in citizens' homes is also collected from the addresses requested by the directorate staff every Friday.
• There are collection boxes for stale bread at 22 points throughout the district. Stale bread is collected by the teams every two days and sent to the livestock farm.
• Furniture waste left next to garbage containers by citizens on the 15th and 30th days of each month is collected by the teams and recycled.
