The First Cosmetic Bottle Made with Recycled Plastic from the L'ORÉAL Group

30 Nov 2021

L'Oréal Group introduced the first cosmetic bottle made from recycled plastic using Carbios' enzymatic technology. Biotherm aims to put these innovative bottles into production in 2025 and will be the first brand to launch a product in the bottle of the future.

The new technology developed by Carbios, a pioneer in the development of bio-technological solutions for the recycling of PET plastics, enables the production of products from 100% recycled materials using enzymatic process. Technology; It can be used to recycle all transparent, colored, opaque and multi-layered PET plastics.

Carbios' enzymatic technology is 10,000 times more efficient than other biological processes and can break down 97% of PET plastic in just 16 hours. Shredded plastic becomes reusable without the need for additional raw material.

The enzyme, which occurs naturally in compost piles and breaks down dead plant cell membranes, was developed through 10 years of R&D studies. In this way, all PET plastics become reusable in a closed, endless recycling cycle. Biotherm will be the first brand of the L'Oréal Group to launch with a completely recycled bottle.

L'Oréal Group Packaging and Development Director Jacques Playe said the following on the subject:

“We have been working with Carbios since 2017 to develop the PET bottle produced with enzymatic recycling technology, which is an alternative to mechanical recycling. We are happy to create the packaging of the future with this pilot application.”

Biotherm Global Brand President Giulio Bergamaschi said:

"Biotherm is a pioneer in environmentally friendly cosmetics and has put sustainable packaging and waste reduction at the heart of its strategy. We are delighted to be the first brand to realize a fully recycled bottle with Carbios' technology."

L'Oréal Grup; In 2017, Carbios formed a consortium with Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe. In 2019, L'Oréal Group invested in Carbios through its venture capital fund BOLD.

The goals set by L'Oréal Group in the field of packaging within the scope of its 2030 sustainability program “L'Oréal for the Future”:

  • By 2025, 100% of plastic packaging will be refillable, reusable, recyclable or compostable.
  • By 2030, 100% of plastic packaging will be from recycled materials or bio-based; Unprocessed plastic of fossil origin will not be used.
  • 100% of the ingredients and all bio-derived materials used in formulas will be traceable and come from sustainable sources by 2030.

To achieve these goals, the L'Oréal Group is working with strategic partners such as Albéa, Purecycle, LanzaTech and Total, in addition to Carbios.

Note: PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic is the most commonly recycled plastic.
