The Green Dot was first introduced in Germany in 1990–1991 to identify packaging that entered a dedicated collection system known as the Green Dot System. The symbol, initially used in Germany, was later adopted in France, Austria and Belgium in the following years.
As the Green Dot system became widespread across EU member states, Packaging Recovery Organization Europe (PRO Europe) was established in 1995, and the Green Dot became the organization’s official symbol.
The Green Dot has since evolved into an internationally recognized model that enables companies participating in the system to effectively fulfill their industrial responsibility under the “polluter pays” principle. When you see a Green Dot on packaging, it signifies that a financial contribution has been made to a packaging waste recovery organization operating in accordance with the EU Directive 94/62 on packaging and packaging waste.

EXPRA (Extended Producer Responsibility Alliance) is a non-profit umbrella organization founded in 2013 for the recovery of packaging and packaging waste, which are industrial obligations. EXPRA serves as the authoritative voice and shared policy platform for its members—organizations established and managed by economic enterprises and operating on a non-profit basis—representing their collective interests.
The “Extended Producer Responsibility” (EPR) model is a national policy instrument widely adopted in the European Union and many other countries. Today, more than 30 countries around the world use the EPR model as an economic tool to ensure the collection and recovery of household waste.
EXPRA’s members include organizations from Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Cyprus (South), the Netherlands, Spain, Israel, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Colombia, Luxembourg, Hungary, North Macedonia, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Chile, Türkiye, New Zealand and Greece.
