Our Areas of Expertise
The International Local Chains Meet Conference and Fair, which brings together local chain market representatives operating in the field of organized food retail and the industry's leading producer and supplier brands, was held at Istanbul Haliç Congress Center on 11-12 April 2018.
At the International Local Chains Meet (YZB) Conference and Fair, which brought together thousands of stakeholders of the retail sector, the factors that threaten our future in terms of sustainability of the planet, environment, agriculture and food access were discussed. At the conference, the session "If nature keeps people alive, let it be retail that keeps nature alive", organized to draw attention to environmental problems, was moderated by TV program producer and director Güven İslamoğlu, ÇEVKO Foundation Public and External Relations Manager Alphan Eröztürk, Good4Trust founder Dr. It was held with the participation of Uygar Özesmi and Tema Foundation General Manager Oben Akyol.
Critical warning for 2050!
Dr., the founder and instigator of Good4Trust.org, said in his speech, "It is high time we started doing some things right for the sustainability of the planet." Uygar Özesmi said: "Our atmosphere and water resources are actually very limited. I think the reason why we have brought ourselves to this point is that we do not have awareness. We are polluting our waters and air. The clean air we breathe is decreasing with each passing minute. By burning oil, coal and natural gas with coal-fired thermal power plants and fossil fuels, we are constantly emitting carbon dioxide and changing the chemistry of the atmosphere.
When the Republic of Turkey was founded, the carbon dioxide rate in the atmosphere was 280 ppm. Today, We have exceeded 400 ppm. Average air temperatures have increased by 1.1 degrees since 1860. On average, it causes an increase of 7 to 10 degrees. If we continue like this, average temperatures will increase by 2.8 degrees by 2050. What will we do when the outdoor temperature reaches 70 degrees Celsius in February 2050? Our planet is alarming about climate change. In addition, the decrease in biodiversity is also a big risk. The decrease in animal species has reached 1 million times the normal level. We need to take urgent measures.”
“The biggest damage to nature comes from poverty”
At the session, TEMA Foundation General Manager Oben Akyol said about the bags that will be paid on January 1, 2019 within the scope of the 'Waste Regulation' of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization; "It is said that consumers do not want to pay for plastic shopping bags when shopping. What is important here is not the cost of using the bag. In order to understand nature, we need to look at it holistically. That plastic bag is soil, that plastic bag is water. When we throw away the plastic bottle cap, it comes out of the bird's stomach. We need to understand our ecosystem correctly," he said. Oben Akyol also touched upon the issues of good agriculture and rural development in his speech; "When we go out into nature, the soil is treated rudely. A lot of chemicals are used. The biggest damage to nature comes from poverty. A poor rural area will definitely have different priorities. TEMA has certain projects to increase the income level and productivity. The pistachio project in Gaziantep is one of the best examples. There is a lot that everyone can do. If you start from today, you can change important things. To give an example again, we deplete the soil with the use of chemical fertilizers in order to buy tea quickly. Look at the tea market coming from abroad to Turkey." "We can achieve rural development with conscious agriculture and sustainable agriculture. The most important thing we can say to retailers from here is that you are the most important intermediaries between that land and the consumer. At that point, we must draw attention to sustainable agriculture and excessive pesticides. We can do projects together as TEMA."
“The conscious consumption messages that retailers will give to consumers are very critical”
In the session, according to statistics, 1 person in Turkey produces 1.2 kg of garbage per day, this ÇEVKO Foundation Public and External Relations Manager Alphan Eröztürk pointed out that the figure is 440 kilograms annually; "With a population of 81 million, we produce 35 million tons of garbage annually, and 7 million tons of this amount is recyclable. If we are talking about the environment and waste, let's be aware of this in terms of quantity. The general opinion of the public is that garbage is not recyclable. Since 1991, we have been carrying out important work with local governments and licensed companies for the healthy recovery of packaging waste. There is a serious recycling and recovery industry in all packaging groups. The issue that needs to be improved is the separate collection of packaging waste. "As the Foundation, we cooperated with local governments and companies to collect 650 thousand tons of packaging waste. In other words, we saved 4.7 million trees last year alone," he said. Eröztürk, who also warned about waste, continued his words as follows; "Data in the world show that one-third of the food produced every year goes to waste. If we continue like this, there is hunger and famine in the future. Our future is dark. When we look at Turkey, the number of breads we say 'It is a sin to throw away', which we hang on trees from time to time, and throw away, is 6 million per day. Retail is of great importance at the point of consumption. The conscious consumption messages it will give to the consumer are very critical. Waste will of course appear. However, the retailer should tell its customers 'Consume responsibly'.
The issue of bags is also very sensitive. We use 1 trillion bags a year. What is important here is the size of the consumption, if we do not separate what we consume in the most appropriate way, the number of plastic particles in the sea will be more than the fish. At this point, there are areas that need to be adopted and embraced by the retail side. To begin with, it is important to target this. Environmental pollution has been explained wrongly. Our world is actually in danger. “If we want to protect nature and ourselves more, there is only one thing to do: consume less.”
