ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer: Private Sector and all stakeholders should contribute more to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals
Moderator Celal Toprak emphasized the importance of ÇEVKO Foundation Talks and gave the first word to ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer. Referring to the 2023 Sustainable Development Report published by the Global Compact and Accenture at the beginning of October, İmer stated that this report examines the contribution of the private sector to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN and predicted to be realized in 2030.
The report states that the private sector's biggest contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals between 2015 and 2022 is to create new job opportunities and increase economic growth; However, this growth has occurred in a way that has a negative impact on the environment; Stating that it was emphasized that the negative environmental factors created in the world triggered social deterioration in poverty, hunger, health and global peace, İmer stated that ten basic suggestions were included in the report to achieve the goals, including supporting gender equality, accelerating climate action, increasing water-related resilience and investing in the circular economy.
Mete İmer stated that in addition to the leading private sector organizations and universities that took part in the ÇEVKO interviews, the public administration, municipalities, individuals, in short, all stakeholders have a great responsibility to take urgent action and make further progress. He added that the ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group will continue to raise awareness on these critical global issues in cooperation with stakeholders.
Özlem Mutlu Doğan, Coca-Cola İçecek (CCI) Group Sustainability Manager: We focus on reducing resource consumption and minimizing waste production
CCI Group Sustainability Manager Özlem Mutlu Doğan emphasized that the concept of sustainability has become a very important topic across sectors. Stating that, according to the World Economic Forum 2022 global risk report, the first risk that will directly affect the world economy at the end of the next 10 years is the failure to combat climate change, Doğan underlined that everyone should focus on this point.
We see sustainability as our way of doing business and put value creation at the center of our sustainability strategy for the sustainability and welfare of societies in the 11 countries where we operate, said Doğan, explaining Coca-Cola İçecek's sustainable value creation model and emphasizing that the value creation model contributes to many Sustainable Development Goals such as responsible production and consumption, water, energy, education and gender equality.
Stating that it is CCI's responsibility to reduce its environmental footprint for the future, ensure social equality, and share with the society what it receives from society, Doğan said that Coca-Cola İçecek's 2030 Sustainability Commitments are grouped under two headings; Environment-related topics include packaging, water, climate; He said that the commitments in the social field are human rights, diversity & inclusion and society.
Stressing that their first commitment focused on combating the climate crisis is to run production facilities with 100% renewable electricity and switch to carbon neutral production by 2030, Doğan said, "As of now, we have completed the installation of solar energy panels in KPGF and Multan in Pakistan, Isparta and Köyceğiz in Turkey, and wind turbines in Çorlu in Turkey. By 2030, we will meet 50% of our electricity needs by purchasing renewable energy and 40% by purchasing renewable energy." "With our investments, we aim to cover 10% of this with carbon neutralization," he said. Özlem Mutlu Doğan said that the second goal on climate change also includes the first commitments; However, he stated that they addressed the entire value chain, and that they aim to reduce direct and indirect emissions per product by 13% in absolute terms compared to 2015, using the year when the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement was signed as a basis when expanding their business volume towards 2030.
Prof. Dr. Zeynep Zaimoğlu / Çukurova University Environmental Engineering Department Head: We are all in the same boat
Çukurova University Environmental Engineering Department Head Prof. Dr. Zeynep Zaimoğlu gave a speech focusing on the water problem and the difficulties in accessing water, which is one of the most important outcomes of the climate crisis. Prof. Dr. Zaimoğlu started his speech by underlining that the consequences of the climate crisis affect today, not some time in the future. Stating that despite the eight years that have passed since the Paris Agreement, the progress in the process is insufficient, Zaimoğlu emphasized that in addition to the humanitarian problems, especially in wars, there is also the problem of unmeasurable carbon emissions. Stating that developed countries cannot get rid of the problem by shifting some production areas to developing countries, Prof. Dr. Zaimoğlu said that borders do not matter in the climate crisis and that all countries are in the same boat.
Prof. Dr. Within this framework, Zaimoğlu drew attention to the fact that water used in agriculture should be taxed like carbon. Emphasizing that it is very important to manage water use, Zaimoğlu said that the concept of "virtual water use" should be understood. Zaimoğlu stated that water is used in the production of a vegetable and that when the product is grown and exported, it is exported with the water it uses, and this issue is ignored.
