EU Waste Shipment Regulation Published

29 Apr 2024

The Waste Shipment Regulation, which restricts the export of waste generated in the European Union to third countries, was published in the EU Official Journal on 30 April 2024. Within the scope of the Regulation, which came into force on 20 May 2024, provisions not related to waste export will come into force on 20 May 2026, provisions regarding plastic waste export restrictions will come into force on 21 November 2026, and provisions regarding the export of other waste types other than plastic will come into force on 21 May 2027. The monitoring process to be implemented within the scope of Article 45 began to be implemented as of May 20, 2024, which is the effective date of the legislation, except for plastic waste.

According to Eurostat data, with 12.4 million tons in 2022, Türkiye received a 39% share of the EU's waste exports and became the country to which it exported the most waste. For this reason, in order to be least affected by the regulations brought by the Regulation and to ensure raw material safety in accessing recycled content, it is important to take into account the conditions required by the Regulation in planning the measures to be taken within the scope of waste management in our country.
