The New Plastic Economy was Discussed at the ÇEVKO Workshop
28 May 2018ÇEVKO Foundation leads the efforts to introduce the circular economy model, which has an important place on the world agenda, in our country. ÇEVKO Foundation, which organized the International Circular Economy Congress in Turkey last year, aims to maintain continuity in the focus of thought and action on the circular economy with a series of workshops it is organizing this year. The New Plastic Economy Workshop, the first of the workshops, was held on May 2, 2018, with the participation of 31 representatives from business umbrella organizations and private companies, moderated by ÇEVKO Foundation Board Member and Pınar Su General Manager Hüseyin Karamehmetoğlu. The institutions and organizations that participated in the workshop, as well as ÇEVKO Foundation experts and officials, are as follows: FASD Flexible Packaging Manufacturers Association, SEPA Rigid Plastic Packaging Manufacturers Association, MASUDER Mineral Water Producers Association, SUDER Packaged Water Producers Association, Anadolu Cam Sanayi, Erbak Uludağ İçecek, L'Oreal Turkey, Plum Water, Pepsi Cola, Unilever, Procter&Gamble, Sarten Ambalaj.
In the presentation made by the ÇEVKO Foundation, the study titled "New Plastic Economy" by the Ellen McArthur Foundation was discussed and it was stated that 30 percent of the existing plastic packaging by weight cannot be reused or recycled without being subjected to basic design and innovation. It was stated that the same study showed that reuse would create economic opportunities for at least 20 percent of plastic packaging. It was reported that the recycling of the remaining 50 percent could become economically attractive with joint work on design and post-use systems.
At the workshop, it was emphasized that plastics thrown irresponsibly into nature can cause serious environmental problems, and on the other hand, plastic packaging is important for consumers' widespread and healthy access to products, especially in the food industry. It was agreed that the goal of the New Plastic Economy is to increase the separate collection, reuse and recycling of plastic packaging at the source. The exemplary work that leading industrial companies are doing and aiming to reduce and recycle plastic packaging was shared. In order to realize the New Plastics Economy, the importance of joint action by product manufacturers, packaging manufacturers and all other actors who form industrial value chains was emphasized.
Recycling of plastics saved the oil that would fill the tanks of 3 million vehicles.
Emphasizing the importance of the circular economy model in terms of sustainability, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer stated that the Circular Economy Package, which has been worked on in the EU for three years, is expected to turn into legal regulations in the coming years, and emphasized that we should be prepared as this development will also affect our country. İmer: "Reaching clean packaging waste is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, increasing the separate collection of packaging waste at the source and developing the recycling system is very important. ÇEVKO Foundation takes the natural leadership of the issue as the first organization authorized by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of the Republic of Turkey for the recycling of packaging waste."
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer; He emphasized that waste of natural resources and energy is prevented by recycling packaging waste produced from plastic and other materials; "Within the scope of our foundation's work, the importance of the issue will become clearer if we consider that in 2017, only by recycling plastic packaging waste in our country, approximately 130 million liters of gasoline was saved, that is, enough to fill the tanks of approximately 3 million vehicles," he said. İmer added that in addition to saving oil and energy with recycled plastic packaging waste, new products such as fiber-containing textile products, waste water pipes, furniture by-products and marley are obtained from waste plastics.
