Our Areas of Expertise
Announcing the steps it has taken for a sustainable life, Pınar Water and Beverage prioritizes the principles of efficiency, fair sharing of water and social equality, environmental health and ecosystem continuity in every new investment.
Pınar Water and Beverage, which introduced packaged water to Turkey for the first time in 1984, has been in line with its sustainable living policy since then; It achieves significant success with environmentally friendly practices such as protecting water resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing the carbon footprint, reducing waste at the source and throughout the life cycle of the product, increasing the use of recyclable packaging, and integrating practices that increase energy and water efficiency into production processes.
Our water efficiency reached 96 percent in 2021
Pınar Water and Beverage Operations Director Koral Kalpaklıoğlu, stating that they act with a responsible production approach by knowing the importance of every drop of drinkable water in the world, states that they have done their best to effectively protect and use water resources efficiently and will continue to do so. Production is made from water resources located in three different locations, and 30 percent of the total flow rate of water drawn from the resources is released into the natural environment to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem. The amount of wastewater is also regularly reduced with automation-based applications in production lines. In 2021, the amount of wastewater resulting from production processes was reduced by 26.31 percent per unit production in the Bursa Uludağ facility, by 16.2 percent in the Sakarya Gökçeağaç facility, and by 18.86 percent in the Aydın Madran facility. Total water efficiency of 95 percent in 2020; It was increased to 96 percent in 2021 as a result of improvements made to reduce production line washing, domestic use areas and filling waste. This rate aims to be increased to at least 97 percent by the end of 2022.
40 tons of plastic waste was prevented
Stating that they have fulfilled the environmental and social benefit requirements since the production process, Kalpaklıoğlu states that they have implemented environmentally friendly practices to minimize the impacts arising from their activities. In the last 10 years, the amount of plastic in packaging and cap materials used in pet bottle production has been steadily reduced. In 2020, the decrease in packaging weights reached 26 percent in the 0.5L product group, 23 percent in the 0.33L product group, and 18 percent in the 1.5L product group. With the weight optimization studies carried out in product packages, a reduction of 10 to 15 percent in shrink and stretch usage was achieved in certain product groups. With the ongoing grammage reduction efforts in 2021, the use of polyethylene terephthalate packaging material in packaged water product groups was reduced by 7.37 percent and in beverage product groups by 13.58 percent. As a result of these studies, approximately 40 tons of plastic waste was reduced at source. With ongoing projects within the scope of plastic responsibility, a 15 percent reduction in the use of polyethylene plastic is aimed by 2024. It is planned to reach a 10 percent reduction rate in polyethylene terephthalate packaging material reduction by the end of 2022. With the simplification and efficiency studies in the production process, it is aimed to reduce wastewater discharge by at least 5 percent by the end of 2022.
Carbon footprint reduced by 31.75 percent
Pınar Water and Beverage, in addition to protecting and managing water, also strives to eliminate all factors that cause climate change. In this context, average carbon emissions per unit ton of production are further reduced every year through energy efficiency, energy saving and operational improvement studies. With new technological investments in the production infrastructure, the amount of plastic is regularly reduced and the amount of environmental waste is reduced. By consuming less energy in the inflation process of low-weight bottles, electrical energy consumption per ton of product was reduced by 16 percent in 2021 compared to 2016. While increasing energy efficiency, the amount of waste is reduced at the source and the carbon footprint in production facilities is reduced. In order to take responsibility on a global scale, carbon offset was carried out in the products and the first Carbon Neutral Certified Packaged Natural Spring Water and Beverage Products were produced in Turkey in 2020. In order to reduce and prevent greenhouse gas emissions resulting from industrial processes and domestic energy consumption; Energy efficiency, energy saving and operational improvement efforts were continued throughout the year. Compared to 2010, when carbon footprint calculations started, it will be reduced by 31.75 percent in 2021, and this rate aims to be increased to 33% with ongoing projects in 2022.
