According to the "ISO Industry Sustainability Trend Research" conducted by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO), the awareness score of industrial companies regarding sustainability issues increased to 50.33.
According to the statement made by ISO, the 2025 results of the research conducted in cooperation with Ipsos to understand the current situation and approaches of industrial institutions in Türkiye regarding sustainability have been announced.
According to the research conducted with the participation of 606 industrial companies across Turkey, this year, the field in which companies achieved the highest score was awareness with 50.33 (scoring out of 100). The scores of the companies in the "approach" field were measured as 31.91, and the application score was measured as 16.14.
In the research conducted for the first time in Türkiye last year, the field in which companies reached the highest score in 2024 was "awareness" with 48.97, while the "approach" score was measured as 34.27 and the "implementation" score was 18.19. The research revealed that there was a 1.36 point increase in the sustainability awareness of industrial companies in one year.
The integration of sustainability into institutions is at an early stage
In the research, which also aims to guide ISO's future studies to support its member industrial companies in the field of sustainability, three different performance scores are created under the titles "Awareness", "Approach" and "Implementation" while calculating the "ISO Industrial Sustainability Tendency Scores" for the country's industry in general.
According to the 7 main results of this year's research, most companies are still in the early stages of integrating sustainability into corporate strategy. While the level of knowledge of companies regarding the sustainability agenda is limited, targets related to economic sustainability are at the center among the few sustainability target setters.
Only 16 percent of industrial establishments in Türkiye calculate their carbon footprint. While the most important factor affecting companies' sustainability goals and actions is "laws and regulations", industrial companies mostly need "incentive/financing support" for their sustainability practices. The total rate of companies publishing public reports on sustainability is around 8 percent.
The level of knowledge on sustainability agenda topics is low
According to the research, the level of declarative knowledge regarding sustainability-related agenda topics remains mostly low throughout Türkiye. The rate of those who say "I am not at all knowledgeable" and "I am not very knowledgeable" on issues other than the Paris Climate Agreement and Türkiye's 2053 net zero emission target is higher than those who say "I am somewhat knowledgeable" and "I am very knowledgeable". However, the level of knowledge on all topics is increasing in companies exporting to the EU.
25 percent of industrial companies have set a sustainability target on an economic, social or environmental issue.
The rate of industrial organizations in Türkiye calculating their carbon footprint increased from 13 percent last year to 16 percent this year. Among the companies exporting to the EU, the rate of those who stated that they calculated their carbon footprint was measured as 26 percent. In addition, considering the next 12 months, among the priorities for environmental sustainability, steps that will be directly effective in reducing the carbon footprint, such as "low carbon energy consumption", are defined as high priority by relatively few companies.
More intensive work needs to be done to raise awareness of companies about combating climate change. While the importance of leaders' commitments to sustainability increases, legal regulations stand out as an effective tool this year, as it was last year, for industrial companies in Türkiye to take action on sustainability.
Incentive/financing support is needed the most
According to the research results, industrial companies need "incentive/financing support" the most for their sustainability practices this year, just like last year. On the other hand, the rate of companies using sustainable finance products and services to finance sustainability projects across Turkey decreased compared to the previous year and remained limited to 10 percent.
Among sustainable finance practices, financial supports required for issues such as combating climate change, transition to a low-carbon economy, and green transformation are becoming more widespread day by day. Again, the total rate of companies publishing public reports on sustainability was 6 percent last year and 8 percent this year.
"Sustainability is now an important criterion in international trade"
ISO Chairman Erdal Bahçıvan, whose views on the subject were included in the statement, stated that the research revealed that the majority of industrial companies in Türkiye see sustainability as a very important part of the company's vision.
Bahçıvan said, "According to the findings, although our industrial organizations are still in the early stages of integrating sustainability into corporate strategy, the rate of companies stating that they have integrated sustainability into their business processes has increased compared to the previous year." He said.
Noting that sustainability issues are being addressed more widely in companies exporting to the EU, Bahçıvan said, "This situation, which shows that the EU being our most important export market, also affects the tendency of our industry towards sustainability, also supports the view that the transformation in the context of sustainability has become an important criterion in international trade." He made a statement.
Bahçıvan emphasized the importance of technology-oriented production in order to maintain the competitiveness of the industry in the transformation process and continued as follows:
"Access to the financing needed for investments in this scope is a critical element. Legal regulations stand out as an effective tool for industrial companies in Türkiye to accelerate their actions on sustainability. In this transformation process, where multilateral perspectives and collaborations are more important than ever, as ISO, we will continue our work to popularize the 'sustainable production' approach, where environmental and social elements are at the center of production, and we will continue to support our country's industry."
"Sustainability is not yet fully integrated into companies' business strategies"
Ipsos Turkey ESG Leader Yasemin Özen Gürelli also stated that the research shows that industrial companies in Türkiye have now adopted sustainability as an integral part of their company vision.
Gürelli said, "While many companies set targets in this field, the extent to which sustainability is integrated into their business processes varies among companies. Companies with a sustainability unit and manager are more prominent in this regard. However, only a quarter of the companies set a sustainability target and take concrete steps. This shows that sustainability cannot be fully integrated into their business strategies." He made his assessment.
Talking about what needs to be done to increase the level of knowledge in the field of sustainability, Gürelli said, "Preparing guiding guides and providing consultancy support especially for SMEs in order to make it easier for companies to set sustainability targets stands out as an important need." He said.
