MIGROS CONVERTED 74 TONS OF FOOD WASTE INTO ANIMAL PROTEIN

Migros continues to contribute to the circular economy with innovative and different projects. Within the scope of the "Black Soldier Fly" project, food waste collected from Migros' designated stores is recycled into the food chain to feed animals in nursing homes using biotechnology. With the environmental cycle, 14 tons of organic fertilizer and 4 tons of food have been obtained so far.

Migros continues its efforts to utilize food waste with a brand new project. Within the scope of the "Black Soldier Fly" project, which was carried out jointly with the Municipality and Germina Agricultural Technologies in 22 months, food waste collected from twenty-three Migros stores determined as a pilot is transformed into valuable raw material resources through biotechnology and brought into the economy. As a result of this upcycling, animal protein, raw materials for the cosmetics industry and fertilizer used as soil enrichment in agricultural areas are obtained. With the animal protein produced from recycled waste, the feed needs of chicken breeders are met, and hypoallergenic, nutritious, environmentally friendly and protein-rich food is produced for animals in nursing homes, and the waste is reintroduced into the food chain. Thanks to this project, 74 tons of food waste has been converted into biomass so far. 14 tons of organic fertilizer and 4 tons of food were obtained. The food produced covered the nutrition of 100 adult animals for 70 days. It is aimed to expand production with new investments.

The Black Soldier Fly project not only recycles food waste, but also offers environmental benefits. Thanks to the project, 262 tons of carbon dioxide emissions were prevented and an effect equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide cleaned from the air by approximately 4 thousand 391 trees in a year was achieved. Additionally, 30 tons of fish were preserved in the oceans and reserved for human consumption.

Migros Ticaret A.Ş. Quality and Environmental Management Director Hülya Günay said, "With the increasing population in the world, the need for animal protein sources is increasing. The market for BSF and its by-products produced with biotechnology, which is a good example of the circular economy, is expected to reach a volume of 4 billion dollars and a size of 8 million tons in the world in 2033. There are not yet very new and industrial-sized facilities for our country. However, this project, which contributes to the circular economy, has made an important start. It produced 74 tons of food waste. "We obtained 4 tons of food, 14 tons of organic fertilizer for use in regenerative agriculture and raw materials for the cosmetics industry. Of course, the project gains do not end there. Reintroducing food waste into the food chain reduces carbon emissions and saves clean water." he said.
