Türkiye Experienced 47 Days of Extreme Heat in 2023

09 Jan 2024

Climate Central, World Weather Attribution (WWA) and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Center published a report on heat waves and the number of people exposed to extreme heat around the world.

The report examines extreme heat events during 2023, the world's hottest year on record, and 11 consecutive months (June 2023 - April 2024) where global temperatures broke records, and finds that the human-caused climate crisis is increasing dangerous extreme heat for billions of people and making hot weather events longer and more likely.

In the report, the number of days that were warmer than 90 percent of the temperatures observed in local regions during the 1991-2020 period is expressed as the number of extremely hot days.

Highlights

The prominent findings of the report are as follows:

  • During a 12-month period, 6.3 billion people (about 78 percent of the global population) experienced at least 31 days of extreme heat, made at least twice as likely by the human-caused climate crisis.
  • In the last 12 months, worldwide, the human-caused climate crisis has added an average of 26 days of extreme heat to the extreme heat that would be experienced in a world without a climate crisis.
  • Using World Weather Attribution criteria, the study identified 76 extreme heat waves in 90 different countries. These events put billions of people at risk.

The report also includes data from Turkey. According to the calculation made by taking the exposure of people living in specific regions as a reference and taking the average of the entire population, due to the impact of the climate crisis, Türkiye experienced 47.6 days of extreme heat in 2023.

If it were not for the impact of the climate crisis, this number would be 18.8 days.
