RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN CLIMATE CHANGE, GREEN DEAL AND SUSTAINABILITY STUDIES

In the online interview titled "Climate Change, Green Deal and Latest Developments in Sustainability" organized by the ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group in cooperation with the Global Warming Congress Committee, GCA General Manager Dr. Abdullah Gayret, Atatürk University Environmental Engineering Department Lecturer and Environmental Problems Application and Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ceylan, Atatürk University Climate Ambassador Şahin Korkmaz and ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer came together under the moderation of Global Warming Congress Committee Chairman Celal Toprak.

The sixth and last ÇEVKO Foundation Talk of the year started under the moderation of Celal Toprak, Chairman of the Global Warming Congress Committee. Toprak stated that this meeting was the most widely attended meeting held on the subject after COP28. Mete İmer, Secretary General of ÇEVKO Foundation, took the first floor in the interview. İmer started his speech by thanking the academics, climate ambassadors and private sector representatives who participated in the ÇEVKO Foundation Talks throughout the year, and shared his evaluations about COP28.

ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer: "The time to deal with the climate crisis has become shorter; the responsibility of each of us has increased as much."

Mete İmer emphasized that the main agenda of the UN 28th Conference of the Parties was to determine where we are in the targets set out in the Paris Climate Agreement and to present a situation assessment for our world in this context, and said, "The issue of whether to exit fossil fuels was also on the agenda at the conference, and this issue caused differences of opinion during the meetings, but these differences eventually ended with a consensus. Although no promise was made to exit fossil fuels, it marked 'the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era'." "Reducing the use of fossil fuels used in energy systems in a "fair, orderly and equitable" manner under the leadership of developed countries has been included in the text," he said.

ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer continued his words as follows: "The global situation assessment made for the first time actually revealed a negative result; unfortunately, it seems that the desired speed is not being progressed towards fulfilling the commitments mentioned in the Paris Climate Agreement. By 2030, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 43% compared to 2019 levels so that the 1.5 degree Celsius increase limit determined in the Agreement can be achieved. Additionally, in order to achieve the determined targets." By 2030, renewable energy capacities need to increase 3 times and energy efficiency improvements need to increase 2 times!” Stating that it is pleasing that the Loss and Damage Fund, which was established to increase the resilience of countries against the effects of climate change, that is, to cover the damages arising from the climate crisis within the scope of "adaptation to climate change" efforts, is pleasing, İmer said: "The parties also agreed to determine the framework and targets in which financial, technological and capacity building efforts will be supported to increase the resilience and adaptation of countries under the name of 'Global Adaptation Goal'." Stating that the biggest problem in coping with the climate crisis is that climate finance has not reached the targeted sufficient amount, the Secretary General of the ÇEVKO Foundation said: "The global situation assessment revealed that the financial commitments of developed countries remain well below the trillions of dollars required for the transition to clean energy and the implementation of national climate plans and adaptation efforts of developing countries. At the conference, a new target of at least 100 billion dollars per year was set for 2024."

Secretary General İmer stated that it was decided to hold the 29th UN Conference of the Parties in 2024 in Azerbaijan and the 30th Conference of the Parties in 2025 in Brazil, adding that at COP 29, governments should set a new financial target required by the size and urgency of the climate crisis; He added that more ambitious, new national contributions, taking into account the 1.5 C limit, will constitute the main agenda at COP 30. İmer concluded his words by saying, "The United Nations Conferences of Parties and other similar meetings, which take place under the eyes of the international community, leave no room for surprises by revealing what has been done and what has not been done against the climate crisis. As humanity, we still have time to win this war, but this time has decreased a lot. In this respect, the responsibility of each of us has increased that much."

Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ceylan: "He pointed out that extreme weather events, which have occurred due to the 10 C increase in global warming increasing the number of natural disasters by 30% and unfortunately now occur at disaster level, cause people to feel stressed and become individuals with low tolerance limits by exhibiting aggressive behavior even in the face of the smallest problems."

The second speaker at the meeting was Atatürk University Environmental Engineering Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ceylan made a presentation titled Global Environmental Problems. He made situation assessments under the headings of Climate Change, Green Deal and Circular Economy, and Latest Developments in Sustainability. Drawing attention to natural disasters caused by climate change, Ceylan said; Stating that excessive rainfall easily turns into floods due to the negative effects of desertification, drought, food shortage, and excessive construction (concreteization), as well as sea floods, tsunamis, and an increase in forest fires, are experienced as extreme weather events, he emphasized the statement of UN Secretary Gutteres regarding climate change during the COP28 process, "You cannot save a burning planet with a fire hose powered by fossil fuels."

On the other hand; He emphasized that the concepts of "climate variability" and "climate change" are often confused. Stating that climate variability covers shorter-term changes, Zeynep Ceylan stated that climate change covers longer-term (decades) and permanent changes.

Stating that increasing temperatures even affect human psychology, Ceylan said, "For this reason, people become unable to tolerate even the smallest events." He pointed out that another important issue is that, as a result of the melting of huge glaciers due to warming, fresh water mixes with salt water, as well as island states and coastal states are submerged, causing the geography of the world to change. Ceylan also mentioned that bacteria and viruses that have been inactively trapped in frozen soil and glaciers for centuries may emerge as a result of thawing ice and cause unprecedented diseases, and that methane gas accumulated under icy soils will be released and will strongly increase the greenhouse effect.

GCA General Manager Dr. Abdullah Gayret: “Glass is an infinitely recyclable material and a responsible type of packaging”

Dr. Abdullah Gayret discussed the issue from the perspective of the production sector. Summarizing the topics that attract attention for both producers and society about climate change under the titles of increase in greenhouse gas emissions and consumption of fossil and biomass fuels, Gayret stated that the three topics that should be emphasized in the fight against climate change are energy efficiency, use of renewable energy resources and prevention of deforestation.

Stating that the glass packaging industry is an energy-intensive industry, Dr. Abdullah Gayret said that there are important ways to go only with energy efficiency until 2050. Stating that there is still a lot of dependence on non-environmentally friendly fuels in the glass industry, Gayret said that innovative developments are needed in this field. Stating that there is a need for a change in quality standards, Dr. Abdullah Gayret said, "It is becoming necessary to make a sustainability declaration that includes not only environment and waste management but also social responsibility."

Giving information about the glass packaging industry, Gayret said, "glass is an infinitely recyclable material and a responsible type of packaging."

Atatürk University Climate Ambassador Şahin Korkmaz had the last word in the interview. Sharing the news compilation of the studies carried out at their universities, he stated that their story started with the Climate Council held in 2022. Stating that they held youth meetings to bring the ideas of young people to the Climate Council, Şahin stated that they interacted with different universities and institutions and prepared the Climate Ambassadors Declarations. Şahin mentioned that they provide SDG training to primary school students, that broadcasts from the university radio are effective and that awareness-raising activities are very important.
