Within the scope of the cooperation protocol signed between ÇEVKO Foundation and Yıldız Technical University, Turkey's first Recovery Test and Research Center GETAM, which was implemented with the support of Istanbul Development Agency and Innovative Istanbul Financial Support Program, started its activities. At the center, many needed tests can be performed, from recyclability to recycled material content, from compostability to biodegradability.
Turkey's first Recovery Testing and Research Center GETAM, which was established within Yıldız Technical University (YTU) in partnership with ÇEVKO Environmental Protection and Packaging Waste Evaluation Foundation, with the support of Istanbul Development Agency and Innovative Istanbul Financial Support Program, started its activities. Combining over 100 years of academic experience of Yıldız Technical University with more than 30 years of experience of ÇEVKO Foundation, the center hosts research and development studies, especially in the field of recycling. GETAM contributes to the development of innovative, more environmentally friendly products in terms of providing academic knowledge and meeting the demands of the industry, and adds a new dimension to sustainability-oriented Public - Academy - Industry collaborations.
GETAM (Recycling Testing and Research Center), established on the basis of international and national standards and accreditation rules, is a first in its field in Turkey. At the center, tests can be carried out in many areas, from whether the packages are recyclable to their compostability, from the amount of recycled material they contain to their biodegradability.
Stating that the working order of the center will be mainly determined by the analysis requests from the industry, that is, economic enterprises that produce packaged products, packaging manufacturers or recycling facilities, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer said, "In GETAM activities, priority is given to non-PET plastics, that is, PE and PP derived plastics. These analyzes can be done and concluded in a short time. It is also possible to have biodegradability and microbial tests on waste and plastic materials at GETAM. These tests are given to non-PET plastics, that is, PE and PP derivative plastics. It can last up to ninety days, six months or one year.” he said.
Studies that will form a scientific basis for environmental declarations can be carried out within GETAM
Mete İmer continued his words as follows: "The increase in social awareness and responsible consumption awareness on environmental and sustainability issues is pleasing developments. Nowadays, consumers are increasingly questioning the environmental impact of the products they purchase. Companies that are sensitive in this regard are giving increasing importance to the use of packaging made from recycled materials. However, the 'Guideline on Advertisements Containing Environmental Statements' published by the Ministry of Commerce of the Republic of Turkey requires that such statements be scientifically verifiable. In GETAM, In this context, all tests can be performed to reach scientific results.”
It is also important for exporting companies
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer pointed out the increasing importance of environmentally focused regulations, especially in exports to EU member countries, and said: GETAM will also serve companies that need the necessary analyzes on this subject. "Such tests and analyzes can be done in some centers abroad, but with GETAM's price advantage, efficient and high-quality working environment, we foresee that demands may come from abroad as well as from our country," he said.
Mete İmer also touched upon the importance that ÇEVKO Foundation attaches to academic collaborations and said, "ÇEVKO Foundation, which was established in 1991 as a voluntary industry initiative to contribute to recycling-oriented sustainable development, also carries the identity of a non-governmental organization that touches large masses. Our foundation is one of the leading institutions in our country that has assumed intellectual leadership on the issues of 'fighting the climate crisis' and 'transition to a circular economy', especially in recent years. We attach special importance to collaborations with academic institutions in this regard. Universities, which are the meeting place of the power of science and the energy of youth, are of great importance for a sustainable world. We have absolute faith that Turkey's first Recovery Testing and Research Center, GETAM, established in cooperation with ÇEVKO Foundation and YTU, will make a great contribution to Zero Waste practices.
