Climate Crisis Is Not Just a Nature Problem: "It Is Intertwined with War, Crisis and Injustice"

Striking FINDINGS FROM EXPERTS AT THE ÇEVKO FOUNDATION CONVERSATION: THE SUSTAINABILITY STRUGGLE OF THE FUTURE IS FULL OF VRAILITIES

In the ÇEVKO Foundation's interview, geopolitical, economic and social dimensions of the crisis were discussed, going beyond traditional environmental discussions. In the interview, it was emphasized that the climate struggle is too complex to be overcome with simple solutions.

The online interviews organized by ÇEVKO Foundation, which brings together the identities of an expert industrial initiative and an active non-governmental organization, in cooperation with the Global Warming Congress Committee, continue in their 5th year. The fifth of the talks titled "Latest Developments in Climate Change and Sustainability" in 2025 was held with intense participation.

The speakers of the online conversation, moderated by Global Warming Congress Committee Chairman Celal Toprak, were ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer, Istanbul Gelişim University Sustainable Environment and Society Application and Research Center Director Assoc. Dr. Başak Özarslan, Hayat Kimya Global Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director Çağlayan Kent, and Özyeğin University Climate Ambassador Emre Yiğit Ay.

"Net Zero Goal Is Possible, But Its Cost Is Increasingly High"

Referring to the Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center's "Türkiye's Decarbonization Road Map: Towards 2053 Net Zero" report, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer spoke with cautious optimism. İmer stated that in order to achieve the net zero target, there is a need for planning according to scientific data and for this, there is a need for guidance from universities and academies, and emphasized that they attach importance to this report for this reason. Mete İmer said, "According to the report, Türkiye's achievement of the 2053 net zero target is possible with an additional investment of 265 billion dollars by 2053. This is a serious cost, but the price increases as time goes by. If we are sincere in reaching the Net Zero target in 2053, all stakeholders, especially the public authority, must find the solution by moving on this path."

"The Dirty Side of Clean Energy: Critical Minerals"

Istanbul Gelişim University Sustainable Environment and Society Application and Research Center Director Assoc. Dr. In her speech, Başak Özarslan emphasized that climate change is not only an environmental problem, but is intertwined with geopolitical tensions and economic conflicts of interest. Reminding that the Russia-Ukraine War led Europe to coal again, he said, "Climate targets have been sacrificed for energy security."

Özarslan's most striking observation was the "invisible face of clean energy". Stating that critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, which are required for green technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles, are generally mined in regions with high environmental and social risks, Başak Özarslan gave the example of child labor seen in cobalt production in Congo and warned, "Clean energy should be clean not only in the output but also in the process."

"Sustainability is Now a Business Imperative"

Hayat Kimya Global Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director Çağlayan Kent said, "Efficient use of resources is critical for economic sustainability as well as environmental sustainability. In the past, we called it 'efficiency'; today, its scope has expanded and become sustainability itself. As Hayat, we manage energy in our production processes in the most efficient way, reducing our environmental footprint and increasing our competitiveness. However, increasing consumer awareness is at least as important as the production processes. This is why we started life with the Ministry of National Education." The We Take Care of Life Ecological Literacy Project is very valuable to us because we have increased children's knowledge of biodiversity, climate and ecology to almost 100 percent with the training we provide. Raising today's children as more conscious and demanding individuals for a better world will be the most critical change factor that shapes the economy of tomorrow. he said.

"A Politician Can Influence Our World for 4 Years"

Özyeğin University Climate Ambassador Emre Yiğit stated that the biggest disappointment in the climate struggle is the variable decisions of politicians. "Unfortunately, the moves of only a few policy makers restrict the space of action of young people all over the world," said Yiğit, criticizing the cutting of funds and the isolation of the youth ecosystem due to the "After Trump" effect.

Yiğit stated that he observed that job and internship opportunities for young people struggling with climate change have decreased, and said, "Although we have hundreds of companies, there are not enough opportunities for young people." However, he emphasized that they were not hopeless and showed the determination of the young people by saying, "This fight is not over. The US election may affect our world for 4 years, but our war has been going on for centuries and we will return stronger."

While the conversation was completed with the valuable contributions of all participants, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer stated that such conversations should continue increasingly and social awareness should turn into action.
