Boğaziçi University hosted the 'Time to Take Action for Turkey's Plastic Waste: Environmentally Friendly Production, Responsible Consumption, Effective Recycling Workshop' on June 8, which has been celebrated as World Ocean Day every year since 1992 by the decision of the United Nations. At the workshop, it was pointed out that the Mediterranean, the cradle of civilizations and the center of an extraordinary environmental heritage, has become one of the seas with the highest level of plastic pollution in the world. It was emphasized that civil society, academia and local-national governments should work together for a smarter and more sustainable plastic production regarding plastic waste. He discussed the problems in the sector, projects to raise awareness about plastic waste, and the principles of working for positive change. Former Rector of Boğaziçi University and SDSN Türkiye Honorary President Prof. Dr. In the workshop, which started with the opening speeches of Üstün Ergüder, UNDP Istanbul Regional Office Program Analyst Etienne Gonin and WWF Turkey President and CEO Nergis Yazgan, striking results from WWF Türkiye's "Exiting the Plastic Trap: Saving the Mediterranean from Plastic Pollution Report" published on the Mediterranean scale were shared with the public for the first time.

THE MEDITERRANEAN IS SOUNDING THE ALARM!
According to the "Exit from the Plastic Trap: Saving the Mediterranean from Plastic Pollution Report" presented by WWF Turkey Communications Director Tolga Yücel, 60 million tons of plastic are produced annually in the world and 27 million tons of plastic waste is created. The report emphasizes that the amount of plastic garbage in the seas is one of the most important problems awaiting a global solution, and states that plastic waste causes around 13 billion dollars of damage to marine ecosystems. The report also states that 144 tons of plastic waste enters the sea every day in Türkiye.

'LEGAL REGULATION IS A MUST'
In the workshop, the contributions that civil society, academia and local-national governments can make for a smarter and sustainable plastic production were discussed in the session titled Mechanisms for a Smarter, Innovative and Sustainable Plastic Industry.
Sustainable Development Association Secretary General Konca Çalkıvık said, "Every minute, a truckload of plastic waste is dumped into the seas. Every year, 9 million tons of plastic waste enters the oceans." "It is not possible to solve the plastic waste issue, which is a global problem, without local-regional cooperation," he said. Çalkıvık also underlined that the principle of volunteering is not sufficient to solve the problem and that legal regulations are needed. ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer, who was a speaker at the same session, stated that the plastic issue is included within the scope of ÇEVKO's circular economy studies and gave information about the extended producer responsibility model and ÇEVKO's work. İmer said, "The future of the new plastic economy, which is a part of the circular economy, lies in innovative solutions. These solutions are only possible when the public and industry work in cooperation." He touched upon the importance of public-private sector cooperation in the design and recycling of plastic packaging. Videos prepared by ÇEVKO on plastic recycling and shared with the public were also shared with the participants.
