The European Union (EU) Commission Proposes a New Framework to Promote Hydrogen and Reduce Methane Emissions.

17 Nov 2021

Making a statement in this context, Frans Timmermans, Vice President of the European Green Deal, stated that it is necessary for Europe to switch from fossil fuels to renewable and low-carbon gases such as hydrogen, and that rules are proposed to ensure this transition and create the necessary markets, networks and infrastructure. Commissioner responsible for Energy, Kadri Simson, stated that they aim to create a competitive hydrogen market with special infrastructure. However, he stated that their aim is to reduce emissions in the natural gas, oil and coal sectors by 80% by 2030 and that they have proposed strict rules on methane emissions from these sectors to trigger action on methane outside the EU.
