ÇEVKO Foundation, the leading advocate of the sustainable recycling system in Turkey, draws all attention to the climate crisis and sustainability with its 30th Anniversary Talks. This time, the guest of the interviews prepared by ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group in cooperation with the EGD Global Warming Congress Committee is Prof. Director of Boğaziçi University Climate Change and Policies Center. The "30th Anniversary Talks" of ÇEVKO Foundation, which is among the organizations that provide intellectual leadership on Climate Change and Circular Economy, are held in cooperation with the Economic Journalists Association (EGD). The guest of the online interviews in August, moderated by EGD President Celal Toprak and with the participation of ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer, was Boğaziçi University Climate Change and Policies Center Director Prof. Dr. M. Levent became Kurnaz. In the interview, the situation in the world and in our country in the fight against climate change and sustainability solutions were discussed.
CEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer, who opened the online meeting, said that the climate crisis makes itself felt more and more all over the world and in our country every day; He stated that the planned actions of individuals, civil society, industry, representatives of the nation and especially public authorities should now accelerate against this crisis. He noted that the ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group was established in 2016 after the Paris Agreement was signed at the UN, and its mission is to raise awareness in society on this issue and accelerate action. He added that the climate crisis and sustainability conversations, prepared in cooperation with the EGD Global Warming Congress Committee, will continue throughout 2021.
Celal Toprak, President of the Economic Journalists Association, also noted that the EGD Global Warming Congress Committee has been working on this issue for many years. He stated that they cooperate with all relevant institutions, especially the ÇEVKO Foundation, to raise awareness in society about climate change.
Prof. Dr. In his speech, M. Levent Kurnaz emphasized the relationship between temperature changes and human population throughout history and drew attention to the importance of the resilience of the ecosystem we live in in terms of the sustainability of human life in the world. Prof. Dr. M. Levent Kurnaz said that global average temperature values, which have increased since 1900, reached their highest level in 2020.
Levent Kurnaz, who showed the direct impact of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon dioxide, which constitutes one third of them, on global warming with scientific data, also gave information about the relationship of this situation with recent natural disasters and stated that climate change and the negativities resulting from it are at the top of the global society's threat agenda. He stated that the top 5 priority agenda items of the World Economic Forum in 2020 consist entirely of environmental issues: "weather extremes", "insufficient action to combat climate change", "natural disasters", "loss in biodiversity", "human-caused environmental disasters".
Drawing attention to the magnitude and immediacy of the threat of climate change, Prof. Dr. M. Levent Kurnaz stated that individuals have an important duty and responsibility in preventing this threat; He explained what can and should be done in many areas, from clothing, consumption habits to travel preferences, food consumption and storage preferences.
