TURKEY'S RISING VOICE ON CLIMATE CHANGE: CLIMATE AMBASSADORS
Climate ambassadors of universities came together in the online conversation titled "ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Ambassador Meets with Young People After COP28", organized by ÇEVKO Foundation in cooperation with the Global Warming Congress Committee. Elif Ayhan from Hacettepe University, Büşra Gül İnal from Antalya Bilim University, Ege Büyük from Turkish German University, Sevda Has from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Tarık Deveci from Bahçeşehir University, Tuğba Cengiz from Konya Necmettin Erbakan University and Yusuf Dursun Durmuş from Ondokuz Mayıs University participated in the conversation with ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer and Global Warming. Congress Committee Chairman Celal Toprak also took part.
There were young people on the podium at the ÇEVKO Foundation Talks this month. At the first meeting of 2024 titled "Climate Ambassador Meets with Young People After COP 28", climate ambassadors who coordinate on the climate crisis at their universities came together with the ÇEVKO Foundation to make their voices heard and exchange views. In the conversation that started under the moderation of Celal Toprak, Chairman of the Global Warming Congress Committee, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer took the first floor.
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer: “Since young people will be most affected by climate change, it is very important that their voices are heard!”
Stating that they are pleased and excited to have the first interview of the year with climate ambassadors, İmer emphasized that the people who will be most affected by the climate crisis in the long term are young people and therefore it is very important for their opinions and suggestions to be heard. He said that climate ambassadors represent not only the youth of their universities, but all of Türkiye.
Elif Ayhan – Hacettepe University: “Thanks to our participation in COP28, we delivered our work to decision makers.”
Ayhan, who also served as the Climate Ambassadors Coordinator, stated that they brought 200 students together on this platform and that thanks to their participation in COP27 and COP28, the studies they prepared reached the decision makers. He called for more support from the public and institutions.
Büşra Gül İnal – Antalya Bilim University: “I think children should be educated through formal and informal activities.”
İnal said that children and women are the groups most affected by climate change. He emphasized that climate education for children should be increased and the climate issue should be included in the curriculum.
Ege Büyük – Turkish German University: “Even a small effort in recycling contributes to the big picture.”
Stating that the climate ambassador guides young people, Büyük stated that consumer demand is the determining factor in companies' transition to a circular economy. He proposed a carbon tax on plastic use.
Sevda Has – Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University: “The fight against climate change is not a choice, it is an obligation.”
Has stated that waste management is not done correctly and there is a lack of awareness in the society. He drew attention to the importance of individual demands that will reduce carbon footprint.
Tarık Deveci – Bahçeşehir University: “Raising public awareness about waste management and zero waste will play a key role.”
Deveci, emphasizing the importance of solidarity regarding the climate crisis, stated that he saw the power of teamwork during the preparation of the COP28 declaration. He said that they expect clear discourse on the elimination of fossil fuels.
Tuğba Cengiz – Konya Necmettin Erbakan University: “There is inadequacy in afforestation and protection of forests.”
Cengiz said that waste separation should start in university cafeterias and emphasized the importance of disseminating climate education and transition to sustainable agriculture.
Yusuf Dursun Durmuş – Ondokuz Mayıs University: “80 percent of this is awareness.”
He stated that climate change is now a crisis, but society still does not perceive it as a crisis enough. He said that increasing the level of consciousness forms the basis of the entire struggle.
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer: “I was very happy with the solution suggestions of the young climate ambassadors.”
Imer stated that it is hopeful that young people have a circular economy understanding and emphasized the importance of progressing under the guidance of science against the climate crisis. He stated that Turkey is slow in this field, but momentum can be gained with the leadership of young people. He said that, as ÇEVKO Foundation, they are ready to support young climate ambassadors.
