CDP Türkiye 14th Climate & Nature Conference 2023

20 May 2023

The results and leading companies of CDP’s 2023 Climate Change and Water Program Turkey, which has been carried out by Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum in Turkey since 2010, were announced on May 21 at the “CDP Turkey 14th Climate Change and Nature Conference and Award Ceremony”.

According to Turkey results, in 2023, there was a 36% increase in the rate of companies disclosing their environmental data within CDP's three core programs: climate change, water security, and deforestation, and the number of reporting companies reached 116.

The 2023 Turkey Results of CDP, the world’s largest environmental reporting platform, whose Turkey operations are managed by the Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum, were announced on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the CDP Turkey 14th Climate Change and Nature Conference, 2023 Results and Award Ceremony. The “Climate Change & Water Program 2023 Turkey Results Report,” which includes CDP Turkey’s analyses and findings for 2023, and the CDP Global and CDP Turkey Leaders determined according to CDP’s Global Scoring Methodology were shared with the public during the event.

Biodiversity and Plastics on the Agenda of Companies in Turkey

According to the announced results, a positive improvement trend was observed in the emission data of companies reporting from Turkey. The rate of companies reporting an absolute increase in emissions decreased to 25% and showed a significant improvement compared to the 51% rate reported the previous year. In addition, 53% of companies reported a reduction in emissions, almost doubling the number of companies that reported reductions the previous year.

93% of companies have identified climate-related potential opportunities; however, the total amount of climate-related risks identified (811) is more than 3 times the reported opportunities (251). This reveals a significant difference between the perception of climate-related risks and opportunities in Turkey.

65% of companies addressed biodiversity at board level and/or appointed a senior executive within the company to address biodiversity-related issues. In addition, 54% of companies have clearly supported initiatives aimed at protecting biodiversity and/or publicly committed to this scope.

81% of companies source their water withdrawals from third-party resources, and generally discharge the water again into third-party areas (81%). While 62% of companies discharge their water into third-party areas without pre-treatment, 12% directly discharge their water, which has not undergone any treatment, into the natural environment. This situation highlights the urgency for companies in Turkey to prioritize responsible management of wastewater discharge.

66% of companies set targets related to plastics, and most of these targets focus on plastic packaging and waste management. Among the reported target metrics, the most common metrics are the elimination of single-use plastic products (21%) and the reduction of the total weight of plastic packaging used and/or produced (16%).
The Evolution of Environmental Reporting

This year, the CDP Turkey Conference was held with the theme “New Era in CDP: Transition from Climate Reporting to Nature Reporting”. In 2024, CDP transitioned to a new and integrated corporate questionnaire for companies by combining all reporting themes (climate change, water management, deforestation). CDP, which published a new SME questionnaire to encourage and facilitate the reporting journey of small and medium-sized companies, also continues to collaborate with the world’s leading standards and frameworks in order to reduce companies’ reporting obligations and encourage mandatory reporting. The most important of these was the integration of IFRS S2, the climate-related disclosure standard of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), into its questions. The Turkey Sustainability Reporting Standards published by the Public Oversight, Accounting and Auditing Standards Authority (KGK) in Turkey are also based on these ISSB standards.

The opening speech of the conference was made by Seray İmer, Sustainability Manager of Garanti BBVA. The keynote speaker of the conference, Patrick de Cambourg, Chair of the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) Sustainability Reporting Board, explained the development and transformation of sustainability reporting from the perspective of EU regulations and stated the following in his speech: “We know that, in the long term, standard corporate reporting can only be effective when it stands on two legs. The first leg is advanced financial reporting; the second is sustainability reporting, which is currently still developing. The functioning of this two-legged system depends on ensuring effective coordination between these reporting frameworks.”

Another speaker at the conference, Ariane Coulombe, CDP Europe Reporting Lead, expressed the approach and objectives regarding the New Era in CDP. In her speech, Coulombe stated: “In Turkey, we see a clear trend of companies voluntarily reporting their environmental data through CDP. This is very important because reports provide the necessary data for taking action. As a reflection of market maturity, companies in Turkey increasingly recognize that greater transparency is a fundamental step toward taking action against climate change. This transparency enables companies to access capital, improve business efficiency and supports compliance with current or future regulations.”

Mirhan Köroğlu Göğüş, CDP Turkey Country Programs Manager, who announced the results of the CDP Climate Change & Water Program 2023 Turkey Report, expressed the following information and views in her speech: “As CDP Turkey, we have been working since 2010 to ensure that companies in Turkey take action on climate issues and align with global developments in reporting. However, we now know that climate change is only part of the problem. Science shows us that climate and nature must be addressed simultaneously. When it comes to reporting, it is vitally important that we focus on all components of nature, including ecosystems and biodiversity. This means a new era for all of us. Together with the whole world, we will now evolve from climate reporting towards nature reporting and a more holistic approach.”

“Transition from Climate Reporting to Nature Reporting” Panel

The panel titled “Transition from Climate Reporting to Nature Reporting” organized within the scope of the conference was moderated by Ata Can Bertay, Director of Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum. The panel speakers were Nicole Hardiman, CDP Nature Standards Lead, Verena Kraus, Senior Manager of the Nature Team at the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), and Sevil Acar, Faculty Member of Boğaziçi University and Lead Author of the Transformative Change Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

During the panel, the importance of nature-based reporting covering all boundaries of the planet when it comes to corporate reporting was emphasized in light of recent developments. Focusing on the role CDP plays in shaping the upcoming period, Nicole Hardiman explained what this transition means for companies. Verena Kraus discussed how financial institutions integrate nature into their business strategies and decision-making processes. Sevil Acar focused on companies’ relationship with nature and the impacts of this relationship on nature, based on IPBES assessments.
