Exemplary Sustainability Practices from Retail Giants

ÇEVKO Foundation continues to address the climate crisis in all its aspects with the ÇEVKO Foundation Conversations initiated in cooperation with the Economic Journalists Association (EGD). The second interview, held in 2022, was titled “Climate Change and Sustainability Studies of Leading Industrial Organizations in Turkey”. While EGD President Celal Toprak moderated the conversation, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer and CarrefourSA and Migros representatives attended.

Culture of Recycling and Sustainability

Mete İmer conveyed the work of industrial organizations from different sectors in the field of sustainability and climate change:

"In today's interview, we are together with representatives of two important organizations from the retail sector that are members of the ÇEVKO Foundation. The sector reduces plastic and other waste in its operations, reduces carbon emissions and provides information to consumers to increase social awareness."

İmer also touched upon current developments regarding the Paris Climate Agreement and Turkey's 2053 carbon neutral target.

"Good Future Plan" from Migros

Migros Product Safety and Environmental Management Group Manager Serpil Ürek introduced the “Migros Good Future Plan” in the interview:

  • Target to reduce carbon emissions per square meter of sales by 35% by 2030
  • Use of a patented water cooling system that circulates water instead of gas in refrigerators
  • Target to reduce food waste by 50% and donation practices
  • Reducing plastic waste, using recycled packaging and Bag Free Shopping Movement

"We include our customers, suppliers and employees in our supply chain. With the Migros Good Future Plan, we include our entire ecosystem in our sustainability efforts."

“What's Right for Life” from CarrefourSA

CarrefourSA OHS, Quality Assurance, Environment and Sustainability Group Manager Tayfun Akusta emphasized the importance of the program by sharing global and Turkish data:

  • Turkey ranks 34th in the Sustainable Development Goals list
  • Serious risks are predicted for water and food resources in 2030
  • Reducing single-use plastics and carbon net zero target

Akusta detailed food waste prevention, sustainability practices in the supply chain, social responsibility projects and cooperation with women producers within the scope of the “What's Right for Life” program.
