Danger of a 3.2 °C Increase in Global Temperature Averages

16 Apr 2022

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Are Expected to Increase Global Temperature by 3.2 °C by 2100 if Current Policies Continue

According to the report titled "Climate Change 2022: Mitigating Climate Change" published by the Third Working Group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it indicates that in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, emissions must peak in 2025 at the latest, be reduced by 43% by 2030, and at the same time, methane must be reduced by one third. Unless policies implemented by the end of 2020 are strengthened, greenhouse gas emissions are estimated to lead to a global temperature increase of 3.2 °C by 2100. The report reminds that electricity generation costs from solar and wind decreased by 85% and 55% respectively between 2010 and 2019, and battery prices, which are critical technology to reduce emissions from transportation, have decreased by 85% in the last 10 years. Stating that digitalization, robotics and artificial intelligence applications can open the door to very strong developments on the energy efficiency side, the report reminds that 20% of global emissions are subject to carbon pricing mechanisms and emphasizes that the steps taken on the policy side are still insufficient. The study underlines that the amount of emissions between 2010 and 2019 corresponds to 80% of the carbon budget that can be used to achieve the targets in the Paris Agreement. While the report states that the annual average global greenhouse gas emissions between 2010 and 2019 reached the highest level, it is stated that the average emission growth rate between 2010 and 2019, recorded as 1.3%, was lower than the average of 2000-2009, which was 2.1%.
