The 'Turkey's Decarbonization Roadmap: Net Zero in 2050' report prepared by Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center (IPC) was announced at an online event. The report includes the steps that need to be taken to achieve the net zero emission target in the fight against climate change by 2050, in accordance with the Paris Agreement adopted by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on October 6. The study is the first to reveal, with scientific data, the course of Turkey's carbon emissions until 2050 and the possible path to be followed to zero emissions by 2050 in line with the Net Zero target. The report also sheds light on the direction in which Turkey's National Contribution Declaration (NDC) should be revised.
The event was attended by IPC Climate Change Studies Coordinator Dr. from the research and writing team of the report. Ümit Şahin, EPRA General Manager Assoc. Dr. Osman Bülent Tör, METU lecturer Dr. Bora Kat, EPRA Deputy Projects Director Dr. Saeed Teimourzadeh, GTE Carbon Managing Partner Kemal Demirkol, Venesco Chairman of the Board Arif Künar, METU Department of Economics faculty member Prof. Dr. Ebru Voyvoda and Kadir Has University, Department of Economics faculty member Prof. Dr. Erinç Yeldan attended.
The research focuses on Turkey's economic indicators in 2018, focusing on electricity production, transportation, buildings, energy use in industry and other productive sectors, and carbon dioxide emissions resulting from industrial processes. Emission pathways for the 2018-2050 period are compared under two scenarios: Base Scenario and Net Zero.
According to the Net Zero Scenario, in line with the net zero target, it is possible for CO2 emissions from energy consumption in all sectors to decrease by 37 percent in 2030 compared to the 2018 level and by 80 percent in 2050, reaching 74 million tons of CO2.
It is emphasized that in order for Turkey to achieve its Net Zero target, the electricity sector must largely transition away from coal and towards renewable energy sources in 2035.
The Net Zero Scenario emphasizes that emissions from the transportation sector can decrease at a rate close to the total of all sectors.
Among the sectors, the fastest decrease occurs in emissions from buildings.
Energy efficiency, electrification and R&D studies are critical to reduce emissions caused by energy consumption in the industry.
