According to the latest data of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), at the end of 2021, the global production capacity in renewable energy reached 3,064 GW and its share in the total capacity increase reached 81%, breaking its own record.
New data published by IRENA shows that renewable energy continues to grow and gain momentum despite global climate uncertainties and energy crisis. According to the report, at the end of 2021, the global production capacity of renewable energy reached 3,064 GW and the total renewable energy stock increased by 9.1%. It should be underlined that solar and wind energies continue to lead new production capacity, but despite this, the clean energy transition is far from being at a level that will prevent the dire consequences of climate change, and that renewable energy production capacity must grow faster than the increase in energy demand to achieve climate goals.
The Flag of Renewable Energy Goes to Wind and Solar
According to IRENA's Renewable Capacity Statistics 2022 report, although hydroelectric energy takes the largest share in global renewable energy production capacity with 1,230 GW, solar and wind energies continue to dominate the capacity in new production. The two types of energy contribute a total of 88% to the renewable capacity. Although the wind energy capacity, which has grown by 93 GW in 2021, lags behind the expected growth targets, it has started to play a major role in the energy transformation for the future.
Energy Crisis Proof That Fossil Fuels Cannot Be Trusted
Despite global uncertainties, growth in renewable energy continues. While this continued growth and performance in previous years show that countries are aware of the socio-economic benefits of renewable energies, it is necessary to underline that despite this promising global trend, the clean energy transition is not rapid or widespread enough to prevent the dire consequences of climate change. It should be noted that investments in fossil fuel power plants will have negative consequences for the survival of the planet, that the world can only overcome the global energy crisis with renewable energy sources, and therefore, turning to clean resources is of serious importance.
Türkiye is in the Top 5 in Europe in Renewable Energy!
Although the world's countries are sometimes late in taking steps towards renewable energy, Türkiye has come a long way in the last 10 years. While Türkiye ranks 5th in Europe and 12th in the world in terms of installed capacity from renewable energy, it is on its way to becoming a wind country, especially with the great strides made in wind energy. It is not far to see that Turkey's investments in renewable energy resources have paid off greatly and that these developments have taken place thanks to the investments made, that more efficiency can be obtained from many renewable energy sources, especially wind energy, with new investments to be made and new paths to be followed, and that Turkey's success in this field will reach its peak.
