First Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report from Vodafone Turkey

Vodafone Turkey, which started to address sustainability within the framework of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in parallel with the developments in the world, published its performance report, which it had previously published under the name "Sustainability Report", for the first time this year under the name "ESG Report". With this work, Vodafone Türkiye became the first country to voluntarily issue an ESG report among the countries in which Vodafone Group operates.

Vodafone, which supports the transition to a net zero economy while contributing to the construction of the digital future, aims to achieve the net zero emission target in its operations by 2030 and in the entire value chain by 2040. The company switched to 100% renewable energy in April 2021, becoming the first and only operator in Turkey to use renewable energy in its entire network.

Aiming to create value with its purpose-oriented approach for a digital, inclusive and sustainable future, Vodafone Türkiye has entered a new era in the performance reporting it has been continuing for 11 years. Vodafone Turkey, which started to address sustainability within the framework of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in parallel with the developments in the world, published its performance report, which it had previously published under the name "Sustainability Report", for the first time this year under the name "ESG Report". The "Vodafone Turkey 2021 ESG Report" discusses the company's environmental, social and governance performance for the fiscal year between April 1, 2020 - March 31, 2021. With this work, Vodafone Türkiye became the first country to voluntarily issue an ESG report among the countries in which Vodafone Group operates.

Vodafone Türkiye Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, Hasan Süel, said:

"Vodafone is among the first companies in the world that grasped the importance of sustainability early and took action in this direction without delay. Our group started to address sustainability issues within the framework of Environmental, Social and Governance as of 2020. In parallel, we decided to continue our sustainability journey, which has been continuing in Turkey since 2010, under the name of ESG reporting in the coming period. Nowadays, it has become even more important for companies to reveal their performance in a holistic manner. In this context, primarily responding to customer demands and investor expectations." We focus on improving our company's ESG performance, transparency in these areas and disclosing more information about the impacts of our activities. With this understanding, we address sustainability within the framework of ESG in our 'Vodafone Turkey 2021 Environmental, Social and Governance Report. Although this is our 11th performance report, it is also our first ESG report. We are happy to present our ESG Report to our stakeholders, revealing the value we create for the world and the society we live in, by using the power of digital technologies.'

Holistic approach to sustainability

The “Vodafone Turkey 2021 ESG Report” discusses the ESG and sustainability strategy built on the company's purpose-oriented vision and the priority issues in this field. The report describes Vodafone Turkey's holistic approach to sustainability under the headings of Employees, Responsible Business and Value Chain, as well as three main value areas: Digital Society, Inclusion and Environment. The report, which includes progress within the scope of Vodafone Group's 2030, 2040 and 2050 targets, as well as the opinions of internal and external stakeholders, reveals that social change is possible when technology and people come together.

Stakeholder participation increased

Placing more emphasis on stakeholder participation in its new report, Vodafone supported the report with the opinions of its stakeholders and linked stakeholder expectations with its priority issues. Vodafone also scrutinized the effects of the latest trends in the world on the company's main field of activity under a new title called "Covid-19 and its Impact on Our Business". On the other hand, the message that social change is possible when technology and people come together was included in the design elements throughout the report. In the report, the number of visuals was increased, digital improvements were made, and readability was facilitated in good practices in value areas.

334.4 billion TL contribution to GDP

According to the “Vodafone Turkey 2021 ESG Report”, the real value of Vodafone's direct, indirect and triggered GDP contribution to the Turkish economy in 15 years was 334.4 billion TL. The company has developed various projects focusing on technology and digitalization-based training and entrepreneurship for women and children, and has reached more than 4.3 million people in the ecosystem by investing more than 47 million TL in the last 14 years. The total value of Vodafone Turkey's support packages for individual customers, dealer employees, corporate customers and public services within the scope of combating the pandemic was 114.7 million TL.

5 million TL investment in renewable energy

Vodafone Turkey focused especially on renewable energy use and waste management for environmental sustainability. The company, which has invested 5 million TL in renewable energy in the last 2 years, has switched to 100% renewable energy as of April 2021, becoming the first and only operator in Turkey to use renewable energy in its entire network. Vodafone Türkiye recycled 97% of its e-waste and reused 3%.

Digital education for women and children

Vodafone Türkiye has also undertaken important work in the field of inclusion. The company, which reaches more than 200 thousand children with its "Coding Tomorrow" project and creates social benefit worth 4.4 TL with every 1 TL invested in the project, aims to provide digital marketing and digital literacy training to 12 thousand women with its "Digital is My Job" project.

50% efficiency with digital agriculture

Continuing its work with the goal of digital society, Vodafone continued to be the operator with the widest coverage in 4.5G by providing service with more than 24 thousand 4.5G communication points in 81 provinces of Turkey. Vodafone Turkey also contributed to the digital society goal with its Digital Agriculture Solutions, which provide at least 25% improvement in production and quality and 50% efficiency in resource use.

Prepared to international standards

The “Vodafone Türkiye 2021 ESG Report” was prepared in accordance with the “core” option of GRI Standards published by the Global Reporting Initiative. The report also included contributions to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals determined by the United Nations and targeted to be achieved by 2030. The report, which also includes Vodafone's contribution to the "Women's Empowerment Principles", is the sixth "Communication on Progress" published by the company after it became a voluntary signatory of the United Nations Global Compact in November 2015.
