Companies Leading the World of Sustainability

ÇEVKO Foundation, which is the founder of the sustainable recycling system in Turkey, discusses the issue of climate change in all its aspects in cooperation with the Economic Journalists Association (EGD) with its 30th Anniversary Conversations project. The interviews prepared by ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group in cooperation with the EGD Global Warming Congress Committee ended with the meeting titled "Climate Change and Sustainability Studies of Leading Industrial Organizations in Turkey". In the online interview moderated by EGD President Celal Toprak and with the participation of ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer, the practices of bp Turkey, CarrefourSA, Coca-Cola İçecek, L'Oréal, Mey Diageo, PepsiCo Turkey and Uludağ İçecek were discussed.

ÇEVKO (Environmental Protection and Packaging Waste Utilization) Foundation, which brings together the identities of an expert industrial initiative and an active non-governmental organization, has been continuing its work with increasing momentum for 30 years with the aim of developing the sustainable recycling system it pioneered and increasing the separate collection of packaging waste at the source. This time, the topic of the online interviews prepared by ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group in cooperation with the EGD Global Warming Congress Committee was "Climate Change and Sustainability Studies of Leading Industrial Organizations in Turkey".

The "30th Anniversary Conversations" project of ÇEVKO Foundation, which is among the organizations that provide intellectual leadership on Climate Change and Circular Economy, is carried out in cooperation with the Economic Journalists Association (EGD). The interview moderated by EGD President Celal Toprak was attended by ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer, BP Turkey Health, Safety, Environment and Security Manager Emir Özdemir, CarrefourSA OHS, Environment, Quality Assurance and Sustainability Group Manager Tayfun Akusta, Coca-Cola İçecek Group Sustainability and Communication Leader Burçun İmir, L'Oréal Corporate Communication and Interaction Director İrem Karaoda Tanrıkulu, Mey Diageo Health Safety and Environment Manager. Çinel İşlek Güncü, PepsiCo Türkiye External Relations and Sustainability Manager Hatice Örs Bingöl and Uludağ Beverage Quality Assurance and R&D Center Manager Tuğba Şimşek attended.

At the opening of the online meeting, EGD President Celal Toprak emphasized the importance of the leadership undertaken by industrial organizations with high environmental awareness in the fight against the climate crisis, and gave the first word to ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer.

Mete İmer touched upon the importance of the Paris Climate Agreement at the beginning of his speech. Mete İmer said, "The Paris Climate Agreement has 3 main goals. The first of these goals is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the global average temperature increase not to exceed 2 degrees Celsius or even 1.5 C compared to the pre-industrialization level; the second is to increase the ability of the parties to adapt to the negative effects of climate change; the third is to provide a consistent financial flow to ensure mitigation and adaptation efforts..."

Reminding that bp announced its vision of becoming a zero-emission company by 2050 or earlier in February 2020 and supporting the world to reach net zero, bp Turkey Health, Safety, Environment and Security Manager Emir Özdemir said, "In order to achieve the zero emission goal, we have implemented our new strategy that will reshape our activities in the transition process from an international oil company focused on resource production to an integrated energy company focused on providing solutions for customers in a 10-year period..." he said.

Tayfun Akusta, CarrefourSA OHS, Environment, Quality Assurance and Sustainability Group Manager, stated that the survey CarrefourSA conducted among its retail customers in the late 2020s to measure the perception of sustainability showed that sustainability and climate change issues are taken very seriously, especially by women and Generation Z, and said, "As a subsidiary of Sabancı Holding, we prioritize the holding's Carbon Net Zero commitment for 2050 in all our activities..." spoke.

Coca-Cola Beverage Group Sustainability and Communication Leader Burçun İmir stated that they aim to manage the company's environmental footprint under 3 main headings: 'Energy management and climate change', 'Water management' and 'Sustainable packaging' and said, "We implement these in all our business steps with less resource use, less waste production and better quality production..."

L'Oréal Corporate Communications and Interaction Director İrem Karaoda Tanrıkulu emphasized that they have placed sustainability at the heart of the company's way of doing business with the L'Oréal Sustainability Program for the Future, which sets bold targets for 2030, and said, "Our program, whose biggest difference is its comprehensiveness, primarily focuses on the impact we create in the entire value chain...".

Mey Diageo Health, Safety and Environment Manager Çinel İşlek Güncü stated that they signed the United Nations Global Compact in 2019 and published the 2020 Sustainability Report and said, "Raising awareness of responsible alcohol consumption, developing a culture based on inclusiveness and diversity, including women and underrepresented groups..."

PepsiCo Turkey External Relations and Sustainability Manager Hatice Örs Bingöl stated that PepsiCo carries out agricultural activities with more than 1,000 contracted farmers who supply approximately 70% of the potato production for chips in Turkey and provides employment opportunities for 3,000 people directly and 40,000 indirectly. "At the beginning of this year, PepsiCo published its Positive strategy, which can be defined as end-to-end transformation, and aims to help establish a more sustainable food system. PepsiCo, which is accelerating its efforts, will reduce more than 3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions with regenerative agricultural practices that will be spread over an area of 28.3 million decares by 2030 under the title of Positive Agriculture.

Uludağ Beverage gives importance to innovation and focuses on R&D; Uludağ Beverage Quality Assurance and R&D Center Manager Tuğba Şimşek, who stated that it is a company with a sustainability perspective that it adopts as a way of doing business in terms of environmental and social aspects, said: "Our most basic raw material is water and we are working for its sustainability...".
