The "biomethanization facility" established to produce energy from organic waste was put into service at PepsiCo's factory in Manisa.

The opening ceremony of the facility was attended by Vice President of the Presidential Investment Office Zeynel Kılınç, Deputy Governor of Manisa Erhan Günay, Yunusemre District Governor Atilla Kantay, and Deputy Secretary General of Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Metin Memiş.

Speaking at the opening, PepsiCo Türkiye General Manager Evrim Şen said that they have achieved a first in the "PepsiCo ecosystem".

Şen stated that they produce electricity from organic waste in the cogeneration facilities of their other factories and continued as follows:

"In this project, we implemented for the first time a system that includes advanced technology and engineering in our Manisa factory, which will produce biomethane similar to natural gas, not electricity. Thus, we produced biomethane gas with 99 percent purity from our organic waste. Thanks to this process, we can use the biomethane we produce as fuel instead of natural gas in our production lines. We believe that the project, which is a first in Türkiye and in the PepsiCo ecosystem, will inspire other companies in our country and in the world. As PepsiCo Türkiye, on the 100th anniversary of our Republic. "We are proud to have invested over 350 million lira in renewable energy resources, 250 million lira in solar energy panels and 100 million lira in biomethanization facilities."

"Someone else's waste will be our raw material"

Şen stated that they aim to receive organic waste from other sources as well as their own organic waste, and gave the following information:

"We applied to the ministry to import waste from outside. Feasibility studies are being carried out. We are waiting for environmental permits. We have started negotiations with other factories near our Manisa factory. We will develop industrial collaborations. Someone else's waste will be our raw material. Therefore, we expect the project to contribute to both our environment and the circular economy. Our plan is to start producing biomethane with industrial symbiosis (symbiosis) in 2024, after the necessary permits are obtained. Thus, we will produce 100 percent of the natural gas we consume." We will be able to cover more than 40 of them this way."

Deputy Head of the Presidential Investment Office Zeynel Kılınç also stated that Türkiye has made a great breakthrough in the last 20 years.

Noting that every successful investment story paves the way for new investments, Kılınç said, "We would like to congratulate the PepsiCo family again, who invested in our country's investment environment by trusting in these days when we frequently announce our message (Invest in Turkey). I would like to thank them once again for sharing our goal of making the Turkey Century 'the century of investment' with the vision of our President." He said.

Protocol members opened the facility by cutting the ribbon.

Facility project

According to the information provided, a team of 50 experts from PepsiCo Türkiye and experts from Germany and Portugal worked on the installation of the biomethanization facility.

At PepsiCo Manisa Factory, which works in accordance with Industry 4.0, the Biomethanization Facility was designed to be compatible with this. The world's most advanced technologies were used in the facility.

In the facility, potatoes, chips, starch, oil, sewage sludge and similar degradable organic wastes are fermented in an oxygen-free environment within 25-30 days and converted into biogas, and biogas is subjected to a series of purification processes and converted into 99 percent pure biomethane.

The facility aims to produce approximately 1.2 million cubic meters of biomethane gas from approximately 10 thousand tons of organic waste annually, meet approximately 30 percent of the annual natural gas needs of PepsiCo Manisa Factory and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1237 tons annually.
