International Union Created Against Plastic Pollution

14 Jul 2022

The Union was established by the decision taken at the United Nations Environment Assembly.

It was reported that the "Highly Determined Coalition to Stop Plastic Pollution" was established under the leadership of the governments of Rwanda and Norway, with the aim of ending global plastic pollution.

The other members of the coalition, which was officially established on August 22, 2022, were Canada, Peru, Germany, Senegal, Georgia, Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Portugal, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Costa Rica, Iceland, Ecuador, France and the Dominican Republic.

In the statement made by the coalition on the subject, it was stated that the source of the idea of establishing the coalition was a decision taken within the scope of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) held last March.

The resolution agreed upon at the Assembly included taking steps to initiate negotiations to develop an internationally legally binding instrument to end global plastic pollution.

The coalition's statement emphasized the importance of this decision being the first after the Paris Climate Agreement to develop an internationally binding instrument.

The Coalition, which will work to adopt an agreement text in 2024, aims to end plastic pollution by 2040.

Members of the coalition will come together in the coming weeks during the United Nations General Assembly to be held in New York, USA, and discuss the next steps.

The Intergovernmental Negotiations Committee will hold its first meeting in Punta del Este, Uruguay, on November 28.

The coalition has basically determined three strategic goals. These; To limit plastic consumption and production at sustainable levels, to create a circular economy for plastics that protects the environment and human health, and to ensure that plastic waste is managed and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.

The amount of waste will increase exponentially

In the coalition's statement, it was pointed out that according to the OECD study, annual plastic consumption, which was 460 million tons in 2019, will increase to 1,231 billion tons in 2060 if no measures are taken.

However, it was shared in the statement that if the current trend continues, the amount of plastic mixed into rivers and lakes each year will increase from 109 million tons in 2019 to 348 million tons in 2060, and the amount of plastic mixed into the oceans will reach 145 million tons from 30 million tons.
