Anadolu Efes Harvested Its First Barley Grown with Regenerative Agriculture Activities

11 Aug 2025

Anadolu Efes, “Agriculture is in the future, there is a future in agriculture!” It continues its effective work to support agricultural production and increase the resilience of the agricultural ecosystem against the climate crisis with its approach. Collaborating with Anadolu Meraları for the sustainability of agriculture, Anadolu Efes achieved the first harvest of barley grown with the regenerative agriculture activities carried out in three provinces determined as pilots. With the positive results of the pilot studies, Anadolu Efes aims to expand its activities throughout Turkey and produce all its products from barley grown with regenerative agriculture activities in the coming years.

The company also offered an incentive package of 158.5 million TL to its farmers, its most important stakeholders in the agricultural ecosystem, in 2025 and contributed approximately 1.7 billion TL to the agricultural economy.

According to FAO data, the agricultural sector stands out as one of the sectors that has an environmental impact but is also one of the most vulnerable to the climate crisis, as it is responsible for approximately 13% of global carbon emissions and uses 70% of clean water resources worldwide.

Regenerative agriculture practices are of great importance to reduce this vulnerability and increase the resilience of agriculture against the climate crisis. According to the Shaping the Future of Farming report of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), in order to limit climate change to 1.5°C, regenerative agriculture methods need to be implemented in 40% of cultivated areas worldwide by 2030.

These practices, which increase the carbon and water retention capacity of the soil, also strengthen biodiversity, making agricultural lands both more productive and more resilient. In this respect, regenerative agriculture stands out as a critical solution area in the fight against the climate crisis.

Anadolu Efes, which obtains half of its raw materials from the soil and has put agriculture at the center of its business since the day it was founded, carries out studies on the effects of agriculture on the climate crisis and the effects of the climate crisis on agriculture. Last year, the company implemented regenerative agriculture practices on a pilot scale in 3 provinces in cooperation with Anadolu Meraları. The studies carried out in this context gave the first concrete results. With these studies, which aim to make the agricultural ecosystem more resilient to the climate crisis, barley grown with regenerative agriculture practices was harvested for the first time. Anadolu Efes aims to expand this project throughout Türkiye and produce all its products from barley grown with regenerative agriculture practices in the coming years.

Beer Group President and Anadolu Efes CEO Onur Altürk stated that regenerative agriculture activities have an important place in sustainability strategies and said, "As Anadolu Efes, we see supporting agriculture as an integral part and priority of our business, rather than a responsibility. Aware of our responsibility towards the future, we also focus on combating the climate crisis in the field of agriculture. This year, with the practices we started in three pilot provinces, we produced the first barley grown with regenerative agriculture practices." "We are proud to harvest the crops. The productive results we have achieved in these areas give us hope for creating more resilient and sustainable agricultural ecosystems. We aim to produce all our products from barley grown with regenerative agriculture practices in the coming years." he said.

Anadolu Efes, which offers a "Farmer Incentive Package" of 158.5 million TL to farmers and contributes approximately 1.7 billion TL to the agricultural economy, carries out studies on circular business models that will contribute to local development and women's empowerment in the provinces where it supplies barley, in addition to its ecological studies for the durability of the agricultural ecosystem. It also implements projects to encourage young people back into agriculture.
