Waste Container Support from ÇEVKO to the Earthquake Zone

09 Dec 2023

50 domestic waste containers, provided with the campaign carried out by the ÇEVKO Foundation, were put into use in the earthquake zone. In the region where environmental cleanliness is still a big problem, collecting domestic waste is of great importance for public health.

After the earthquake disaster that took place on February 6, 2023, the epicenter of which was the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş province and devastated the country, collecting and managing post-consumer waste in the disaster area became an important need. In order to respond to this need, ÇEVKO Foundation launched a campaign called 'Domestic Waste Container Campaign for the Earthquake Zone' in cooperation with Istanbul Ataşehir Municipality. With the contributions of ÇEVKO Foundation as well as ÇEVKO Foundation members Sarten Ambalaj, GCA and P&G Turkey, significant support was provided to post-earthquake cleaning and environmental protection efforts with 50 household waste containers shipped to the region.

ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer said that while efforts are continuing to return life to normal in the region, the issue of waste management has become increasingly important and said, "The earthquake we experienced on February 6, 2023 deeply wounded us all. Healing these wounds requires long-term work and cooperation. We focused on environmental cleanliness in our campaign that we launched in cooperation with Istanbul Ataşehir Municipality. With the contributions of our Foundation and three valuable companies that are members of the Foundation, together with our stakeholders, we have collected 50 wastes in the region." "With the support of Ataşehir Municipality, 25 waste containers were delivered to Kahramanmaraş-Nurhak Municipality and 25 waste containers were placed at the relevant points. Our foundation will continue to support environmental protection and cleaning projects in the future, in cooperation with all our stakeholders," he said.

In addition to the basic problems that emerged after the earthquake, such as shelter, access to food and water, needs such as cleaning and on-site collection of household waste also gained importance. In addition to providing infrastructure for the collection of waste, the campaign also aims to contribute to the solution of the hygiene problem that arises in the region.

While 40 of the 50 containers delivered to the region within the scope of the campaign were covered by the ÇEVKO Foundation Economic Enterprise, the contributions of three Foundation member organizations made it possible to supply 10 more containers.
