In the online interview titled "Climate Change, Green Deal and Latest Developments in Sustainability" organized by the ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group in cooperation with the Global Warming Congress Committee, Migros Sustainability Management Group Manager Cansu Ergün, Ondokuz Mayıs University Environmental Engineering Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ardalı, Ondokuz Mayıs University Climate Ambassador Batuhan Ateşli and ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer came together under the moderation of Global Warming Congress Committee Chairman Celal Toprak.
The ÇEVKO Foundation Talk, which was held for the fifth time this year, started under the moderation of Celal Toprak, Chairman of the Global Warming Congress Committee. Mete İmer, Secretary General of ÇEVKO Foundation, took the first floor in the interview. İmer started his speech by bringing up the issue of "Greenwashing" and defined the concept as claims of individuals or institutions that are not based on data on environment, sustainability and similar issues. Mete İmer reminded that public authorities around the world started to make regulations and take precautions following the reactions on this issue.
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer: Environmental claims should not mislead the consumer
Mete İmer continued: “Environmental claims that suggest that a product, service, process, brand or business is better for the environment should not mislead consumers.” Listing six principles to prevent environmental claims from causing greenwashing, İmer listed these principles as follows: "Claims must be 'realistic and precise', 'clear and unambiguous', 'should not be vague', 'should not hide or omit important information', 'comparisons made should be fair and meaningful', 'should take into account the entire life cycle of a product or service' and 'must be provable'."
Reminding that the Guide on Advertisements Containing Environmental Declarations prepared by the Ministry of Commerce in Turkey to prevent greenwashing came into force on December 13, 2022, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General said, "It is stated in the guide that the certificates and approvals specified in the advertisements regarding a product or its packaging must be verified with information and documents received from authorized institutions, relevant departments of universities or accredited research, testing and evaluation organizations; declarations regarding degradability are publicly available." It is stated that it can be used if there is evidence obtained from institutions, relevant departments of universities or accredited research, testing and evaluation organizations. According to the guide, consumers should not be misled by statements made on "recyclability" and "recycled material content".
Recyclability, recycled material content, biodegradability, compostability, etc. are conducted for the first time in Turkey at GETAM, the Recovery Testing and Research Center, which has just started operating in cooperation with Yıldız Technical University and ÇEVKO Foundation. Stating that tests and analyzes can be made on these subjects, İmer concluded his words by saying, "I hope that the university and NGO cooperation initiated by ÇEVKO in this field will be an example for other universities and NGOs."
Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ardalı: Ecocide will be considered a crime from now on
After Mete İmer, Ondokuz Mayıs University, Department of Environmental Engineering Faculty Member Yüksel Ardalı was the other participant who spoke in the interview. Making a presentation titled Climate Crisis and Green Transformation, Ardalı started his speech by drawing attention to the temperature changes in the world.
Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ardalı started his speech by stating that the change brought about by climate change causes significant environmental problems. Stating that carbon dioxide measurements started in the 1850s, Ardalı said that carbon dioxide measurements have increased by 40 percent since then. Stating that no environmental problem is on its own and independent, Ardalı stated that people cause their own extinction.
Talking about a recent decision taken by the EU, Ardalı said that ecocide will be considered a crime from now on. Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ardalı continued his words as follows: "We have moved from the stage of fear and concern about the climate crisis to the time to take action. What happens in the North Pole does not stay in the North Pole. It affects everyone."
Ardalı stated that there are problems with food, water and energy constraints and that living species have started to leave the areas where they live. Underlining the concept of sustainability, Ardalı reminded that all sustainability topics should be implemented simultaneously within the framework of the Green Deal.
