Anadolu Efes introduced functional malt fiber raw material to the food industry through upcycling

Anadolu Efes introduced functional malt fiber, a value-added raw material, to the food industry through upcycling. Anadolu Efes has been carrying out R&D studies since 2020 to transform malt pulp, which is a by-product of the industry, into functional malt fiber. At the invitation held at the Academy of Culinary Arts on October 16, World Food Day, Anadolu Efes Group Corporate Communications and Relations Director Selda Susal Saatçi said that it is very important for the business world to adopt business models based on circular economy instead of linear business models in order to reduce its pressure on nature. He emphasized that according to the 2023 Global Circularity Gap Report data, the global economy is only 7.2% cyclical. Susal Saatçi stated that they prioritize business models and practices that will contribute to the circular economy at Anadolu Efes.

931 million tons of food is wasted every year in the world and 18.1 million tons of food is wasted every year in Turkey. With the increasing world population, the importance of efficient resource use and food with high functional benefits is increasing. As a by-product of the industry, approximately 40 million tons of malt pulp is produced annually in the world and approximately 200 thousand tons in Turkey. Anadolu Efes has been carrying out R&D studies since 2020 to ensure the transformation of malt pulp into functional malt fiber, a value-added raw material. Functional malt fiber can be used in many different areas in the food industry.

Anadolu Efes Group Corporate Communications and Relations Director (CCAO) Selda Susal Saatçi shared the following on the subject: "According to the latest report of the United Nations, the world population will increase to 10 billion in the 2050s. According to the most current food security data of the World Bank, today's food insecurity rate has increased to 29.6% and this affects 11.3% of the global population. This means that we need efficient resource use, sustainable agriculture and food practices more than ever." In this context, as a part of our sustainability strategy, we transformed a by-product produced in our industry into a value-added raw material as a result of the R&D studies we carried out with various stakeholders and the Destek initiative. This year, World Food Day focuses on the critical role of water for life on earth. As Anadolu Efes, we are happy to prevent water consumption and carbon footprint resulting from the production of raw materials from scratch. "We are also proud to implement the application," he said.

By adding a new dimension to its R&D and innovation approach, Anadolu Efes carries out programs to train entrepreneurs from within the institution, as well as supporting the entrepreneurship ecosystem outside the institution. Malty, the company's first commercialized initiative born from the in-house entrepreneurship platform "Anadolu Efes Entrepreneurship Workshop", produced Turkey's first upcycled snack, Malty Bites, last year. Malty is one of the two startups from Türkiye selected in the Global FoodTech500 list. It is also the first and only member of Upcycle Food Association (USA) and FoodValley (EU) elected from Turkey. Malty, which produces Turkey's first upcycled snack, saves 19 liters of water with each package. One of the initiatives of Anadolu Efes Enterprise Workshop this year is experimenting with the production of sustainable paper from barley straw.
