A regulatory proposal from the European Commission on the certification of carbon removal processes

06 Dec 2022

Within the scope of the European Green Deal, the European Commission has proposed a regulation on the certification of carbon removal processes.

The Commission stated that with the regulation, the EU's capacity to digitize, monitor and verify carbon removal processes will be improved; Thus, he states that carbon removal technologies and sustainable carbon agriculture solutions will contribute more to the Union's environmental goals. The proposal highlights four criteria for carbon removal processes to be certified: being digital, providing an “additional” contribution beyond current practices, providing a long-term and permanent solution, and being compatible with sustainability principles.

The regulation points out that bioenergy, which operates with carbon capture and storage, and technologies that capture and store carbon directly from the air, can permanently eliminate carbon. In addition, agriculture, forestry and carbon farming are highlighted in natural solutions and the potential for new business models for those working in these fields is highlighted. The Commission states that the regulatory proposal will encourage energy-efficient construction materials and wood/wood-based construction products with high carbon storage capacity.
