Migros became the first food retailer in Turkey and the 26th in the world to receive full approval at the world norm with its scientifically based sustainability approach. Migros' carbon reduction efforts to combat climate change within the scope of its Good Future Plan have received full approval from the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), one of the world's most respected authorities in this field. At the end of SBTi's verification process, all long and short-term goals and activities of Migros were evaluated according to 260 criteria. Having approved the consistency of both 2030 carbon emission reduction and 2050 net zero targets and the accuracy of its methodology, Migros became the first food retailer from Turkey and the 26th food retailer in the world to receive this global approval.
Migros, which leads the food retail industry with scientifically based sustainability targets in line with its Good Future Plan, has received full approval for its carbon reduction targets from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), one of the world's most respected organizations in its field. Migros raised the bar in its sector and became the first food retailer among the 7 companies in Turkey whose short and long-term goals were all approved by SBTi. With the approval of Migros, the number of food retailers worldwide that can receive approval in this context increased to 26.
Stating that the concept of sustainability is at the center of Migros' business model, Migros Group Chief Executive Officer Özgür Tort said, "In the "2025 Global Risks Report" announced at the World Economic Forum this year, the top 4 risks foreseen for the 10-year future are related to environment and climate issues. We are making important investments in this context in line with our Migros Good Future Plan." We are taking realistic and concrete steps. In addition to our solar energy investments in renewable energy, we are taking measures to protect our ecosystem with the value-creating models we follow for sustainable water management, combating food waste and reducing plastic waste." "As Migros, our priority is to ensure the public's uninterrupted access to affordable and healthy food," he said.
Özgür Tort continued his words as follows: "With the approval we received from SBTi, the accuracy of our scientific-based methodology in our climate road map in our good future plan, and the consistency and reliability of our near and long-term carbon net zero targets have been registered as world standards. Within the scope of renewable energy investments, Migros aims to provide 1/3 of its total energy consumption from its own solar power plants by the end of 2026. For this, we have started to commission solar power plants one after the other. Our Migen subsidiary has made significant investments in this direction. It also increases energy efficiency. In order for the work on combating climate change to progress with concrete steps, our current situation must first be determined, measured and verified based on scientific data. The rates we have achieved in the past are also evidence of the concrete work we will do in the future. Although we are a company that grows every year, we have exceeded 1/3 of our direct carbon emissions reduction target in the last three years. We are also taking concrete steps towards a 42% reduction in carbon emissions by the end of 2030 and Net Zero targets by 2050. "We are working with our business partners to create an overall impact in the fight against change," he said.
Migros Works for Total Impact in Sustainability with Its Suppliers
As Migros moves towards its 2050 carbon Net Zero targets, it has also added a 32% reduction in indirect emissions together with its suppliers by the end of 2033 among its targets. Migros, which is included in the BIST Sustainability 25 Index, is one of the 5 companies from Turkey that entered the 'Global A List' by receiving the highest grade of "A" from both of the CDP 2023 Climate Change and Water Security programs.
