PepsiCo Releases 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Summary

PepsiCo; Published the 2023 progress summary on Environmental, Social and Governance (EMS) results. “In our three-year pep+ journey, we have made significant progress on our ESG goals thanks to the focus we have provided across PepsiCo,” said PepsiCo Chief Sustainability Officer Jim Andrew.

Having achieved some Environmental, Social and Governance (EMS) targets ahead of schedule in 2023, PepsiCo continues on its path by implementing new targets and making strong progress on other issues. The 2023 EMS Summary, including EMS Topics from A to Z and the EMS Data Center, provides a detailed update on pep+, PepsiCo's global transformation program aimed at increasing long-term business performance and the positive impact it creates in the world.

PepsiCo Chief Sustainability Officer Jim Andrew said of the report: "Through our three-year pep+ journey, we have made significant progress on our ESG targets, driven by focus across PepsiCo. Our use of virgin plastic has decreased year on year, and our total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are down from 2022 and our baseline year of 2015. While all of this is worth celebrating, the road ahead will continue to be full of challenges. We are committed to our efforts to create a meaningful impact and “We continue to evaluate where we need to allocate time and resources to ensure we are focused on building strong, strategic partnerships with other stakeholders and embracing and scaling breakthrough technologies.”

The company has achieved global results through a broad range of innovations, strategic investments, groundbreaking partnerships and a multitude of activities carried out by its 318,000 global employees:

  • Reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 13% compared to the previous year, and total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 5%,
  • Reduced the use of virgin plastic obtained from non-renewable resources by 4% compared to the previous year,
  • More than doubled its global regenerative agriculture footprint to over 1.8 million acres,
  • Operations in high water risk regions recorded a 25% improvement in water use efficiency compared to the 2015 base year, two years earlier than anticipated.
  • Reaching more than 91 million people since 2006, providing access to safe water for more than 10 million people,
  • Two new targets were set to reduce sodium and offer different food ingredients: 36% of our food volume had the sodium amount or less in these new reduction targets, and we delivered 75 billion servings of different food ingredients to consumers.

Strong results were achieved in Turkey in line with global targets in 2023:

  • 100% Sustainable potato and corn production, rapid progress in regenerative agricultural practices,
  • Meeting 30% of the natural gas need from biomethane gas with the Manisa Biomethanization facility,
  • Recycling 69% of the water used operationally in our Tarsus factory to the Berdan basin,
  • 57% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to 2015.
