According to the UN's new report, a typical AI data center consumes the same amount of power as 100 thousand homes. The study states that by 2030, data centers may consume as much electricity as the whole of Japan today.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said major technology companies must commit to running their data centers entirely on renewable energy by 2030.
Guterres, while presenting the UN's new report titled "Seizing the Moment of Opportunity" on energy transition together with the International Renewable Energy Agency, stated that large technology companies should also act responsibly in the use of water for cooling purposes.
Guterres said, “Artificial intelligence can increase efficiency, innovation and resilience in energy systems, but it is also energy hungry,” and continued: “This is not sustainable, until we achieve it.”
According to the UN, a typical AI data center consumes the same power as 100,000 homes, and the largest centers currently built will use 20 times that figure. The report states that by 2030, data centers could consume as much electricity as the whole of Japan today.
According to the UN, while renewable energy capacity is increasing worldwide as costs decrease, only developed economies such as the USA, Europe and China are moving away from fossil fuels. The vast majority of developing countries are left behind. This means that clean energy is not replacing fossil energy at the speed and scale needed.
The report states that emerging geopolitical risks, including customs duties, may increase clean energy costs in the short term. Additionally, large increases in renewable energy capacity will make grids more variable. The solution to this problem may cause costs to increase for a while. However, the report predicts that in the long term, the cost of clean energy will continue to decline as technology improves and the supply chain matures.
In his speech, Guterres said that the energy transformation has reached a point of no return and said, "The clean energy future is no longer a promise, it is reality. No government, no industry, no special interest group can prevent this."
According to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency, more than 90% of new renewable projects produce electricity at less cost than the cheapest fossil fuel alternative. According to the UN, approximately 2 trillion dollars were invested in clean energy in 2024. This amount is approximately 800 billion dollars more than the amount spent on fossil fuels.
However, there are still deep inequalities in investments in clean energy. Africa accounted for only 1.5% of global investment in renewable energy last year. Nearly 1 in every five dollars invested in clean energy since the Paris Agreement came into force in 2016 has gone to emerging markets outside China.
