PepsiCo Türkiye: Net Zero Waste and Circular Economy

Acting with the vision of Net Zero Waste, PepsiCo Turkey continues to be an example and a pioneer in the PepsiCo world with its circular economy-based applications by producing its own energy and its own fertilizer in its factories.

As the devastating effects of climate change are felt worldwide and the global food system is under pressure, PepsiCo Turkey carries out all its operations in the production phase with the mission of creating a positive environmental, social and economic impact to create a sustainable food system.

With this understanding, PepsiCo Türkiye implements a circular economy model that extends from field to factory, in line with its global sustainability vision. All of its factories are certified with the Zero Waste Certificate of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. PepsiCo Türkiye, with its Net Zero Waste vision, produces its own energy and the fertilizer used in potato production in its factories.

100% Renewable Electricity Target in its Factories

PepsiCo Türkiye, which has reached the target of 100% renewable electricity in its factories, obtains approximately 50% of its electricity needs from waste.

The company carries out exemplary work in Turkey and the world in the field of energy production from waste. Since 2007, it has been producing biogas by using waste products and sewage sludge resulting from production activities in Biodegradable Waste Processing - Biomethanization licensed Organic Waste Processing Facilities in Suadiye and Tarsus factories. This gas is converted into electrical energy with the cogeneration system.

As of 2020 and 2021, the electricity production capacity in Organic Waste Processing Facilities will be increased and 50% of the electricity needs of the factories will be met from these facilities. The remaining electricity need is provided by solar panels and companies that provide renewable electricity supply. Thus, PepsiCo Türkiye becomes one of the first countries in the world to reach the 100% renewable electricity target.

Naturalis Project: Reduction in Chemical Use in Potato Production

With the Naturalis project, the amount of chemicals used in potato production is reduced by 40%.

Within the scope of the Naturalis project, the fermented fertilizer obtained from the anaerobic digesters in the organic waste processing facility is dewatered and sent to the contracted fertilizer production company. It is turned into fertilizer by adding mineral additives to be used in potato growing processes and delivered to contracted farmers under the Naturalis brand. Thanks to this project, a sustainable production chain is created.

PepsiCo Turkey managed to reduce chemical use in potato production by 40% and carbon emissions by 11.5% with the Naturalis project. The project was implemented entirely by Turkish engineers and is being exported to more than one PepsiCo business unit.
