40 million euro investment in recycling programs

Another major milestone, according to the report, was the launch of an aseptic beverage carton with a paper-based barrier and 90 percent renewable content, reducing the carbon footprint by a third (33 percent) and taking Tetra Pak one step closer to developing the world's most sustainable food packaging. While 100 million euros were invested in packaging research and development in 2023, the delivery of certified renewed equipment, which was 106 units in 2022, increased to 133 units in 2023. In addition, 1.3 million tons of cardboard packaging were collected and sent for recycling, an increase of 7 percent. There was also a 14 percent increase in the volume of polyAl sent for recycling.

25. The Sustainability Report also revealed the results of the improvements Tetra Pak made in its production processes. Within the scope of the report, it was announced that a total of 10.4 billion plant-based packages and 12.6 billion plant-based caps were sold, while a 28.9 percent decrease in solvent emissions in production operations was recorded.

Türkiye activities were also included

The report also includes some information about Tetra Pak's operations in Turkey. Tetra Pak, which develops food processing technologies that help reduce food loss and waste in order to transform wastes in the production process into value-added products, aims to achieve a 50 percent reduction in product loss in application processing lines by 2030. In line with this purpose, Tetra Pak continued its efforts to reduce food waste in all its facilities providing on-site food service in 2023. For example, the Izmir factory donated more than 40 percent of its food waste to animal shelters, and the remaining waste was used for energy recovery.

The areas of food systems, circularity, climate, nature and social sustainability that Tetra Pak focuses on throughout the report are each supported by the 2030 Strategy, of which sustainability across packaging, processing and service businesses is also an important part. Relevant goals and objectives in these areas are regularly monitored, managed and reported.
