ÇEVKO Foundation Talks continue in 2023. The first of this year's talks, prepared by the ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group, in cooperation with the Global Warming Congress Committee, was held under the title "Latest Developments in Climate Change, Green Deal and Sustainability". The speakers of the meeting were academics and a young university student climate activist.
The interview was moderated by Celal Toprak, Chairman of the Global Warming Congress Committee, with the participation of ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer; Paris Bosphorus Institute President Bahadır Kaleağası, Kadir Has University Faculty Member Dr. Aslıhan Erbaş Açıkel and Kadir Has University Climate Ambassador Ayça Sezer attended as speakers.
Mete İmer shared the latest developments and drew attention to international initiatives such as the European Commission's Green Deal Industrial Plan and the Climate Club. He also emphasized the increase of ETS systems and the contribution of revenues from emission trading to climate actions.
Imer emphasized that 60 percent of Türkiye is prone to desertification and 50 percent is at risk of earthquakes, and stated that policies and climate laws based on sustainability principles should be put into effect quickly.
İmer explained that, according to the UN-supported 2023 Climate Inequality Report, the carbon footprint of high-income groups is much higher than that of low-income groups, and this has serious consequences for climate justice.
The importance of young people contributing to the processes of finding solutions to the climate crisis was emphasized. It was stated that the scientific studies and interdisciplinary approaches of universities play a critical role in the climate fight.
Paris Bosphorus Institute President Bahadır Kaleağası explained that artificial intelligence and green transformation are areas that support each other and the importance of Turkey's integration into this transformation. He also drew attention to energy investments and economic integration with the EU.
Dr. Aslıhan Erbaş Açıkel talked about the work of the Climate Change and Law Laboratory they established at their university. He emphasized that climate justice is critical for intergenerational justice and the protection of countries with low carbon emissions.
Ayça Sezer summarized the responsibilities of young people and their work in the fight against climate change. He drew attention to the Climate Law, sustainable energy, carbon emission control and social awareness activities.
