The 32nd Issue of ÇEVKO Transformation Magazine is Out!

27 May 2025

Dear Readers,

In this issue of ÇEVKO TRANSFORMATION, we have collected many news and articles that we think will interest you, under the headings "Climate Crisis", "Green Transformation", "Green Dot", "Responsible Industry and Sustainability" and "Waste Management". We have tried to prepare a full magazine for you. I hope you like it.

The impact of the “Climate Crisis” is increasing in the world and in our country. Unfortunately, the measures taken against this greatest threat in world history are insufficient, and time is rapidly working against us. As ÇEVKO Foundation, our 10-item proposal package, which we published to policy makers and public authorities in Turkey at the end of 2022 with our NGO identity, remains current: 1- In order to reach the 2053 carbon neutral target, we should work to determine our national contribution declaration as an absolute reduction target in line with this target, 2- Enacting and implementing the climate law and necessary legal regulations, 3- Using the Emission Trading System or similar methods to limit greenhouse gas emissions. and setting a limit and price on carbon emissions, 4- Making and implementing a plan to gradually reduce the use of coal in energy production, 5- Making and implementing a plan to increase forests and other carbon sinks, 6- Increasing energy efficiency in buildings, industry and transportation, making the transition to renewable energy more assertive, 7- Reducing emissions from transportation, buildings, agriculture and waste, as well as emissions from the energy sector and industry, 8- Developing and implementing regional-scale plans and studies on adaptation to climate change, 9- Creating serious financial resources for all these; Providing this resource from public, private sector, national and international funds, 10- Raising awareness of the climate crisis in society and launching a national campaign to change habits. We will continue to reiterate these suggestions and monitor their implementation.

The EU "Clean Industry Agreement", which we discussed under the title of "Green Transformation", is a new development and is as important as the "Green Agreement" that concerns us closely. On 27 March, the EU Environment Council met to discuss the key environmental aspects of the Clean Industry Agreement. The focus of the discussion was circularity and the Circular Economy Act. At this meeting, ministers exchanged views on the legal gaps that need to be addressed to increase reuse, remanufacturing and recycling. In this context, member states agreed on the need for further harmonization of Extended Producer Responsibility programmes.

We reach more companies and consumers every day with our “Green Dot” work. We continue to encourage industrial organizations that carry out projects related to design, waste management and social responsibility beyond their legal obligations with our Green Dot Industry Awards, and our university students with our Green Dot Student Awards. Never forgetting that the “Green Dot” is perhaps the oldest and most widespread international sign expressing Extended Producer Responsibility in packaging waste management.

The Extended Producer Responsibility model in waste management is gaining importance almost everywhere in the world; We share with you the developments in various states of the USA, Denmark and Bosnia-Herzegovina on this subject under the title "Responsible Industry and Sustainability". Of course, our priority is our demands and suggestions about the re-implementation of this model in our country after 15 years of implementation and 5 years of interruption at the international Extended Producer Conference we organized as ÇEVKO Foundation in Istanbul in December 2024. You can find details about the conference in the pages of our magazine.

Finally, in our "Waste Management" section, we included the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which was re-published in the EU, among many other topics. The regulation, which has increased its binding force by turning it into a "regulation" from the previous "directive" form and is expected to be implemented in the same way in all member countries, includes provisions such as eco-design, including the use of recycled materials in packaging, with the aim of supporting the circular economy, prioritizing reuse, high recycling targets and the necessity of Extended Producer Systems to achieve these.

I am proud to present to you ÇEVKO DÖNİSİM, which was prepared with great effort, and I would like to thank all those who contributed wholeheartedly.

Mete İmer

ÇEVKO Foundation General Secretary
