ISO Sustainability Platform established within the scope of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) Sustainability Vision; Its second meeting was hosted by ICI Sustainability Platform President Mustafa Tacir, who is also a member of the ICI Board of Directors.
At the meeting held with the participation of industry, public and local administration, finance, university, non-governmental organization representatives and ISO consultants, firstly, after evaluations were made on the outputs of the first meeting; The 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was among the main agenda items of the meeting, was discussed.
At the opening of the meeting, ICI Sustainability Platform President Mustafa Tacir said that the fires, weather events, floods and typhoons experienced in our country and around the world clearly show how serious the climate crisis is, and emphasized that the issue of sustainability is becoming an increasingly vital issue due to these disasters and loss of life.
In his speech, Merchant stated that one of the most important criteria for ensuring global competitiveness in all sectors, from agriculture to energy, from industry to logistics, is policies based on the fight against climate change and caring about environmental sustainability.
He continued, "The cost of climate disasters in 2020 is said to be 360 billion dollars. Unfortunately, 4.7 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year. In particular, we see that 100% of the assessments made by the IPCC in its previous reports have been realized." Continuing, Tacir stated that, therefore, the main agenda of today's session will be climate change and its effects.
Later, the participants expressed their opinions in line with the agenda consisting of the outputs of the First Working Group of the 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Turkey's Green Deal Action Plan, Options in Combating Climate Change and ISO Industrial Congress Preparations, and made strategic suggestions on these issues that will contribute to ISO's sustainability vision.
At the meeting, the report outputs of the IPCC 6th Assessment Report, which are a "red alarm" for humanity, were emphasized and it was underlined that the targets regarding net zero emission reduction came to the fore in the fight against climate change. Information was given about the Promotion of Energy Efficient Engines in SMEs - TEVMOT Project carried out by the Ministry of Industry and Technology and the transition to energy efficient engines in the industry.
Participants were informed about the Green Agenda and Green Bulletin activities carried out by ISO to raise awareness about sustainability, as well as the preparations for the ISO Industrial Congress to be held in December.
Platform members stated that it is necessary to address climate change at the macro level and take rapid and concrete moves on issues such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and circular economy, starting with the goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Another important agenda discussed on the platform was the Turkey Green Deal Action Plan, which aims to ensure adaptation in the fight against climate change and serves as a road map that will strengthen competitiveness in exports. While officials from the Ministry of Commerce shared the details of the action plan with the platform members, the participants talked about their opinions about this plan.
It was stated that the Turkish industry should create an active sustainable development strategy, starting with the goal of net zero carbon emissions. In the world order where our natural resources are decreasing and recycling of raw materials is gaining importance, green and circular economy, which is of great concern to our industrialists, has been brought to the agenda. The importance of road maps focusing on green financing and sustainability of investment in the understanding of sustainable production and consumption was discussed.
Finally, information was given about "A Comprehensive Assessment and Roadmap Study for Energy Efficient Engine Transition" and "Promoting Energy Efficient Engines in SMEs - TEVMOT Project" with the agenda of options in the fight against Climate Change.
