Migros Published Its First "Integrated Sustainability Report"

Migros published its Integrated Sustainability Report, which includes the 2030 and 2050 targets determined by including its entire ecosystem. The report, prepared by Migros within the framework of the "Migros Good Future Plan" and containing all the work carried out on national and international platforms, aims to reduce carbon emissions by 42 percent by 2030.

Migros announced in its integrated report that it will reduce carbon emissions by 42 percent by 2030 as an absolute target based on science. Migros Ticaret A.Ş. Chief Executive Officer Özgür Tort said, "As Migros, we have always opened the door to the future. We have adopted the principle of sustainable growth, contributing to society, transforming our industry with innovative solutions, and taking responsibility for the protection of our planet and resources. This year, we prepared our sustainability report in the "Integrated Report" format, a first in the food retail industry. This report is a letter written to the future."

Providing information about the report, Migros Ticaret A.Ş. Chief Executive Officer Özgür Tort said, "As Migros, we have always opened the door to the future. We have adopted the principle of offering higher quality, better products and services to our customers, investing in our employees, growing sustainable together with our suppliers, contributing to the society we live in, creating transformation in our sector with innovative solutions, and taking responsibility for the protection of our planet and resources. This approach has made sustainability the natural building block of our giant ecosystem. Our Migros Good Future Plan was also formed in line with this approach. We are running towards more challenging targets every year. This year, sustainability "We prepared our report in the "Integrated Report" format, a first in the food retail industry. “We aimed to reduce carbon emissions by 42 percent in absolute terms by 2030”

Ozgur Tort stated that it is important for the world to limit global warming to 1.5°C with science-based targets in this century and that Migros has raised the bar in its goal of reducing its carbon footprint, and listed the concrete targets highlighted in the Integrated Sustainability Report as follows: "By 2030, Scope 1 (with gas leakage) compared to 2020 "We aimed to reduce our carbon emissions (sourced) and Scope 2 (caused by electricity consumption) by 42 percent. We are taking concrete steps towards the carbon net zero target. For this science-based target, we will popularize practices that will reduce gas usage and save electricity with the water cooling system patented by Migros."

“We are among the top 10 companies in Turkey in the field of sustainability”

Underlining that Migros is the only retailer to be included in the BIST Sustainability Index for 8 years in a row, Tort continued as follows: "We were among the Climate Leaders three times in the CDP and among the Water Leaders once. In reputable research reports, Migros is among the top 10 companies in Turkey in the field of sustainability. We continue our work to combat climate change, the negative effects of which we all experience."

“We support the strengthening of producers in the market by working with many cooperatives”

Stating that they aim to reduce water consumption per square meter of sales by 10 percent by 2030, Tort said, "We have supplied a total of 1 million tons of GAP fruits and vegetables so far within the scope of the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) that we pioneered. This year, we aim to increase our supply tonnage by 20 percent. We have started working to reduce the carbon emissions of regenerative agriculture and agricultural products. Locally "We prioritize the sale of produced products in our stores in nearby regions, at the same time, we reduce carbon emissions and support the strengthening of small producers in the market by working with many cooperatives. Thanks to the special training we provide to women's cooperatives, we enable them to raise their production standards and create ample opportunities for them to sell their products in our stores," he said.

“We have updated our target of increasing the proportion of women in managers to 35 percent”

 

Tort emphasized that they set new targets on many issues in the Sustainability Report and set the bar much higher, and said, "We will reduce our food destruction rate by 50 percent by 2030. We have almost halved our target by achieving a 22 percent reduction in the last 3 years." We participated in the "10x20x30" initiative with 23 of our suppliers. We committed to preventing 493 tons of plastic waste by 2023 and prevented 247 tons of waste in the first year. We also continued our steps to support gender equality within our company, as in all segments of society, and updated our target to increase the proportion of women in managers to 35 percent. We aim to have at least 1 female manager in our store.”
