Our Areas of Expertise
Acting with the awareness of the importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance for all its stakeholders, Vodafone Turkey continues to contribute to studies in the field of energy efficiency and improve its environmental performance with the solutions it implements within the company and offers to its stakeholders.
The company, which switched to using 100% renewable energy as of April 2021, reduced the amount of energy consumed per mobile data at base stations by 28% in the 2020-21 fiscal year. The company, whose renewable energy investments exceeded 5 million TL in the last 2 years, continued to contribute to its stakeholders and the environment with digital products and services that provide energy efficiency and cost savings.
Aiming to create value with its purpose-oriented approach for a digital, inclusive and sustainable future, Vodafone Türkiye continues its efforts towards energy efficiency. Aiming to increase energy savings with the solutions it implements inside and outside the company, Vodafone Turkey switched to 100% renewable energy use in the 2020-21 fiscal year and reduced the amount of energy consumed per mobile data at base stations by 28%. The company, which has invested more than 5 million TL in solar energy systems in the last 2 years, became the first and only operator in Turkey to use renewable energy in its entire network.
Making a statement, Vodafone Türkiye Deputy Chief Executive Officer Hasan Süel said:
"Digitalization is positioned as the key to energy saving, efficient use of natural resources and emission reduction. Increasing use of electronic devices and mobile data, with the accelerating effect of COVID-19, increases the demand for energy and carbon emissions. In line with this demand, meeting the energy needs of the telecommunications sector from renewable energy sources instead of fossil resources, investing in technologies that reduce energy consumption and disseminating these technologies play an important role in the fight against the climate crisis. As Vodafone, we address the issue multidimensionally and throughout our entire network." We use 100% renewable energy, regularly monitor consumption in technology centers and base stations where energy consumption is intense, and carry out projects to reduce it. We carry out energy management in line with our in-house policies and international standards such as ISO 50001. On the other hand, we contribute to our customers' savings and reducing their carbon footprints with our energy-efficient digital products and services. As Vodafone, we continue to carry out value-adding efforts in energy saving by using the power of digitalization. We will.”
More than 5 million TL investment in renewable energy
Vodafone Turkey has invested more than 5 million TL in renewable energy in the last 2 years. Vodafone, which aims to reduce the energy taken from the grid in data centers and produce the energy used with solar energy, established solar energy facilities using high-efficiency monocrystalline PV panels in data centers in Adana and Esenyurt. Vodafone aims to reach a total installed capacity of 2 Megawatts, produce approximately 3 Gigawatt hours of green energy annually, and prevent approximately 1,451 tons of carbon emissions annually, with the renewable energy investments it will implement in 5 main technology centers in Istanbul, Izmir, Adana, Tuzla and Diyarbakır in the coming period. In addition, continuing its renewable energy investments in base stations, Vodafone Turkey increased its renewable energy installed power capacity by 18% by commissioning solar energy hybrid systems in the 2020-21 fiscal year. The company continues its efforts to minimize carbon emissions by using wind and solar-based renewable energy solutions and other energy alternatives.
100% renewable energy on the grid
Vodafone supplies all of the electricity consumed in 12 data centers, 15 office buildings and more than 25 thousand base stations across Turkey from renewable energy sources. The company, which switched to using 100% renewable energy as of April 2021, became the first and only operator in Turkey to use renewable energy in its entire network.
The first country in the group to receive ISO 50001 certification
As of 2020, Vodafone Turkey, which completed the certification processes for the ISO 50001 Energy Management System of its technology centers in Esenyurt, Tuzla, İzmir, Ankara and Adana and approximately 25 thousand base stations, became the first country within the Vodafone Group to commission this system in all of its base stations and main technology centers.
Smart energy management in data centers
Vodafone reduces greenhouse gas emissions in its operations with energy efficiency projects. Vodafone controls the cooling infrastructure in data centers with Artificial Intelligence and performs cooling efficiently by detecting excessive hot and cold points with the help of Machine Learning algorithms. Thanks to this technology, energy savings of up to 30% were achieved by integrating air conditioners in data centers with Artificial Intelligence. On the other hand, thanks to the VFD (Variable Frequency Driver) application, the fan speeds of conventional cooling units in data centers were made variable with VFD units, resulting in 14% energy savings. Vodafone also aims to save 480 MWh of energy annually by replacing lighting fixtures with LED in 5 large data centers.
Saving carbon with smart energy meters
Vodafone helps its customers reduce their environmental footprint with the solutions it offers in the field of Internet of Things. Smart energy meters offered by Vodafone enable households and businesses to track and reduce their energy use, while reducing energy bills and the environmental impact of energy production. Vodafone's IoT platforms, which connect more than 12 million smart energy meters worldwide, saved approximately 1.6 million tonnes of carbon in fiscal 2020.
