The IPCC report that the whole world has been eagerly awaiting has been announced

08 Aug 2021

The Working Group I Climate Change 2021: Physical Science Basis report under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world's most respected climate science organization, has been published.

The report contains very important scientific findings about how the world's climate systems are changing. The study, approved by 234 scientists and 195 governments, is considered the most important update since the 5th Assessment Report (AR5) published by the IPCC in 2014, which brings together the most current data and analyzes in climate science, and the 1.5°C Special Report (SR1.5), which is considered a turning point in the scientific community.

The main findings highlighted in the report are as follows:

  • Scientists have no doubt that the planet is warming due to human activities.
  • Attribution science provides evidence of humanity's impact on the climate system. Human-caused emissions are seen as the main reason why the planet is changing and becoming less stable.
  • In all realized scenarios, it is predicted that the planet will warm at least 1.5°C. Even in the scenario where the most ambitious steps are taken within the scope of emission reduction, the planet warms by 1.5°C by the 2030s, again exceeding 1.6°C in these years, but by the end of the century, temperatures drop again to 1.4°C.

The report also details the future impacts and risks of climate change:

  • Climate change increases the severity of heat waves, excessive rainfall, droughts and tropical storms.
  • The warming and acidification of the oceans seriously affects ecosystems and seafood.
  • Global sea levels will continue to rise in the coming decades, posing major risks to coastal areas.
  • Adapting to climate impacts is critical, especially for vulnerable communities and developing countries.

Scientists emphasize that urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the only way to limit the effects of the climate crisis. Reducing emissions will not only keep temperature rise in check, but will also help mitigate negative impacts on water resources, agriculture and biodiversity.

The report also includes recommendations for policy makers:

  • Rapidly reducing carbon emissions and limiting the use of fossil fuels.
  • Investment in renewable energy resources and increasing energy efficiency.
  • Development and implementation of climate change adaptation plans.
  • Supporting global cooperation and scientific research.

As a result, the IPCC report clearly reveals the effects of human activities on the climate and calls for urgent action. In order for future generations to live in a safe world, it is critical to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement climate change adaptation strategies.
