Concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability are increasingly influencing the business and shopping preferences of Generation Y and Z.
“Z and Y Generation Survey 2024”, Deloitte surveyed more than 22,800 Generation Z (born in 1995 – 2005) and Generation Y (born in 1983 – 1994) from 44 countries. conducted a survey with the participants. One of the key findings of the survey was the importance participants placed on a sense of purpose at work. 86% of Gen Zers and 89% of Millennials say a sense of purpose is important for overall job satisfaction and well-being. Additionally, more than 40% of Generation Z and Generation Y state that they reject jobs and projects that do not align with personal values, such as environmental impacts, non-inclusive practices towards different segments of society, protection of mental health and work-life balance.
According to the survey results, 62% of Generation Z and 59% of Generation Y are concerned about climate change. Both generations want governments to impose sanctions on businesses to strengthen their actions against climate change.
75% of respondents rate the organization's social impact as an important factor when evaluating a potential employer. 46% of Generation Z and 42% of Generation Y state that they have left or are planning to leave the company they work for due to its environmental impacts.
The survey shows that sustainability concerns also drive respondents' consumer behavior. 64% of Generation Z and 63% of Generation Y say they are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products and services. Additionally, more than 30% of respondents say they research companies' environmental impacts before purchasing a product or service.
Participants state that they have taken various actions to combat climate change. More than 60% of Generation Z and Y state that they are planning to avoid fast fashion or have taken steps in this regard, more than 50% are considering or taking action to reduce air travel, and more than 50% state that they are planning or taking a vegetarian or vegan diet. In addition, 18% of Generation Z and 19% of Generation Y state that they have purchased an electric vehicle, and 40% and 39%, respectively, state that they plan to purchase an electric vehicle in the future.
