The Commission is working on a plan that will increase the 2030 target from 40% to 45%
The European Commission is preparing to increase its renewable energy target to reduce the union's energy dependence on Russia.
Providing information about the plan at the commission, Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Deputy Director of the European Commission Energy Directorate, said in her speech that they are working to increase the renewable energy target for 2030 from the current 40% level to at least 45% in the plan to be announced in May, and noted that they are continuing the impact analysis despite the effect of this increasing energy prices.
Wörsdörfer also emphasized that the study to be published will include very clear and concrete suggestions for the acceleration of permit processes for renewable energy investments in the union countries and the proliferation of bilateral supply agreements (PPAs) in line with this goal.
Mechthild Wörsdörfer underlined that despite the high level of energy consumption for heating and cooling purposes, little progress has been made towards increasing the share of renewable energy in these areas, and also informed that a minimum renewable target will be determined for these two areas in the plan to be announced.
Wörsdörfer, who also stated that biomass will continue to be an important part of the union's renewable energy production, stated that stricter sustainability criteria should be applied to forest biomass in order to keep the impact of this activity on biodiversity and carbon sinks to a minimum, and that the plan to be announced will include proposals for more installations limited to 5 MW in this area.
Another important item that will be included in the plan will be that hydrogen production from renewable energy will be defined in the union's renewable energy directive and the support conditions will be determined.
