Climate Change and Sustainable Development Research Center was established at METU

Middle East Technical University Climate Change and Sustainable Development Application and Research Center Regulation was published by Middle East Technical University (METU) and entered into force.

In accordance with the regulation, METU Climate and Sustainability Research Center will carry out the studies listed below.

  • Developing adaptation and solution suggestions for the problems caused by climate change.
  • Supporting the determination of national contributions towards the Paris Agreement.
  • To develop sustainable development governance policies and take part in their implementation.
  • To carry out scientific research and practices on climate change and its consequences, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
  • To produce projects for the adaptation of society and infrastructures to changing environmental conditions.
  • Raising social awareness about climate change and its effects.
  • To make scientific contribution to the development of realistic and reliable climate and sustainable development policies.
  • To carry out research and development activities and to support the research activities carried out.
  • To train specialized, entrepreneurial and researcher manpower.
  • To provide the necessary physical and technical infrastructure for science and technology research and development required for climate change adaptation and solution, and to provide training and consultancy support.
  • To cooperate with national and international institutions and organizations, to develop projects in cooperation with universities, public and private sectors.

The Director of the center, which will consist of the Director, Board of Directors and Advisory Board, will be appointed by the Rector for a period of 3 years. The Rector may reassign the person whose term of office has expired.

The 5-person Board of Directors, which will serve for 3 years, will consist of the Director and 4 faculty members determined by the Rector.

The Advisory Board will be appointed with the recommendation of the Director and the approval of the Rector, among the representatives of the relevant private or public institutions and people with experience in similar Centers from other universities.
