An exemplary application to the world that blends innovation and sustainability from Migros. Migros' entrepreneurship and joint innovation platform, Migros Up, comes together with entrepreneurs and implements new applications.
In cooperation with Migros Up and OTTAN Studio, the shelves produced with the upcycling technique from the shells of walnuts and hazelnuts sold in the store were used in the aisles of Migros' MLife brand products. Organic product waste that was not used for sale was upcycled and recycled as raw material. Thus, product waste contributes to the economy as a value and provides benefits for nature.
Migros Ticaret A.Ş. Kerim Tatlıcı, Deputy General Manager Responsible for Information Technologies and Business Development, said, "We are happy to implement innovative projects and collaborations with Migros Up that excite young people and everyone with an entrepreneurial spirit. Within the scope of this project, we have implemented a project that will set an example to the world with OTTAN Studio, which ranked among the startups that responded to Migros Up's launch call." he said.
Migros Up, the entrepreneurship and joint innovation platform launched by Migros last year, collaborated with OTTAN Studio, which participated in the launch program and won the prize, to reuse organic waste in stores. Within the scope of the project, the pilot study of which was carried out, the shells of hazelnuts and walnuts sold in the store were converted into bio-composite materials using upcycling techniques and the use of zero plastic, resulting in the production of shelves for MLife branded product sections in the same store.
With the project, Migros aims to contribute to both nature and the economy by reusing food and organic waste that are not suitable for consumption.
Kerim Tatlıcı: “We have undertaken a project that will set an example for the world”
Migros Ticaret A.Ş. stated that the circular economy is of critical importance for the future of the world, and that in this context, they attach great importance to the efficient use of resources and the transformation of waste into new resources. Kerim Tatlıcı, Deputy General Manager Responsible for Information Technologies and Business Development, said, "The goals of Migros Up, which we launched last year as the first and only food retail company with an R&D center in Turkey, include adding value to the Turkish enterprise ecosystem as well as producing exemplary projects for the world as a result of collaborations and studies. We are happy to implement innovative projects and collaborations with this platform, which excites young people and everyone with an entrepreneurial spirit while benefiting the society. Within the scope of this project, we rank among the entrepreneurs who responded to the launch call of Migros Up." "With OTTAN Studio, we have implemented a project that will set an example for the world." he said.
Underlining the importance Migros attaches to innovative practices and supporting entrepreneurship, Kerim Tatlıcı continued his words as follows: "We call on entrepreneurs in different periods, provide them with the opportunity to express themselves, and develop joint projects. With this work we carried out in cooperation with our entrepreneurial company, we are happy to break new ground in the world by reusing the organic waste of the products offered for sale in our store in the production of raw materials and turning them into shelves in the same store. Apart from this collaboration in which we blend sustainability and innovation with entrepreneurship, we are happy to break new ground under many different headings." We will implement applications that will benefit society by taking advantage of Migros' digital and innovative infrastructure.”
How was the sustainable bio-composite material prepared?
This is where OTTAN technology came into play. First of all, the supplied waste was cleaned and disinfected. The shells, which were ground and separated according to granule sizes, formed the main raw material of the bio-composite material. In the next step, the mixture consisting of 68 percent hazelnut and walnut shells and the remaining green resin was poured into molds and baked to obtain the final plates.
Migros aims to halve food destruction rates by 2030
Migros, focusing on its efforts to combat food waste within the framework of the Migros Good Future Plan, aims to reduce food destruction rates by half by 2030, and has achieved half of this goal by achieving a 24% reduction in the last 2 years. In this context, it aims to ensure that the food produced with great effort has the value it deserves and is consumed as food, with many methods such as operational improvements to prevent food losses, automatic ordering system, discounted sales for mature products. However, at the end of the day, it donates the food that does not turn into sales to those in need based on product quality and nutrition, donates the food that is not suitable for human consumption to feed stray and forest animals, and converts the non-edible parts into biogas.
