COP29 ENDED IN BAKU, RESOURCE TRANSFER OF AT LEAST 300 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR FROM DEVELOPED COUNTRIES TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES FORESEES
The online conversation titled "Latest Developments in Climate Change and Sustainability", organized by ÇEVKO Foundation in cooperation with the Global Warming Congress Committee, took place on 25 November 2024. Boğaziçi University Climate Change and Policies Application and Research Center Board Member Prof. Dr. The conversation attended by Murat Türkeş, Netpak Board Member Özge Avcı Paşaoğlu, METU - Climate Ambassador Kardelen İşlek and ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer was moderated by Celal Toprak, Chairman of the Global Warming Congress Committee.
ÇEVKO Foundation Talks continued in November. This month's conversation started with the opening speech of Mete İmer, Secretary General of ÇEVKO Foundation. İmer started his speech by referring to the World Meteorological Organization's report titled State of the Climate 2024. Stating that the report draws attention to the 1.54°C temperature increase recorded in the January-September 2024 period, İmer said, "According to the report, this does not mean that the Paris Climate Agreement's target of not exceeding the 1.5°C temperature increase is no longer achievable. There is still hope."
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer: "Within the scope of climate finance, it is aimed for developed countries to provide at least 300 billion dollars to developing countries every year."
Referring to the 29th United Nations Conference of the Parties, which ended in Baku, Mete İmer stated that the priority agenda item of this conference was climate finance. Reminding that the Paris Climate Agreement stipulates that the target of developed countries providing 100 billion dollars of climate finance to developing countries annually will be renewed before 2025 and a higher target will be set, İmer emphasized that the parties agreed on this issue. İmer concluded his words as follows: "After various negotiations, an agreement was reached stipulating that developed countries would provide at least 300 billion dollars to developing countries every year."
Prof. Dr. Murat Türkeş: “Policies should be created taking into account that the poor are more harmed by the negative effects of climate change.”
The second speaker in the conversation was Boğaziçi University Climate Change and Policies Application and Research Center Board Member Prof. Dr. He became Murat Türkeş. Stating that the subject should be focused on climate change, sustainability, sustainable development and new trends, Türkeş started his speech by saying, "I especially want to focus on climate change action, which is one of the sustainable development goals." Türkeş stated that climate action should be addressed in a comprehensive framework, and that this scope includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, changing lifestyles and behaviors, and reducing the negative effects of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by developing sink areas.
Prof. Dr. Murat Türkeş continued his words as follows: "Cities should be transformed in accordance with sustainability targets in many areas such as energy, food security and disaster resistance. This transformation should take place within the framework of central planning, a public understanding and the principle of a just transition. Policies should be created taking into account that especially the poor are more harmed by the negative effects of climate change."
Netpak Board Member Özge Avcı Paşaoğlu: “We support the circular economy with environmentally friendly production strategies and low-carbon products.”
Ozge Avcı Paşaoğlu started her words by saying, "The effects of climate change around the world have now become more evident and destructive. 2024 is expected to be the hottest year on record. This situation deeply affects not only the environment, but also economic and social life," and emphasized that resources are limited and needs are unlimited. Paşaoğlu said, “As Netpak, we produce low-carbon products with environmentally friendly production strategies and support the circular economy.”
Netpak Board Member Özge Avcı Paşaoğlu said: "Approximately 20 years ago, we predicted that recycling and sustainable products would gain importance and directed our production lines to environmentally friendly, reusable products. This strategic change enabled our company to take pioneering steps in the field of sustainability," he continued and underlined their roadmap.
METU - Climate Ambassador Kardelen İşlek: When summer comes, instead of saying "it's vacation time", we start thinking "where will there be a forest fire?"
The last speaker of the conversation was Middle East Climate Ambassador Kardelen İşlek. İşlek said, "In the past, when the rains started, we said 'it was a blessing, how nice'; today, we worry about 'will there be a flood? Will we face a material or moral loss?' Similarly, when summer comes, instead of saying 'it's time for a holiday', we start thinking 'where will a forest fire break out?' Many things that used to be enjoyable have now become a source of concern for young people and future generations."
Talking about the activities of the Climate Ambassadors platform, İşlek stated that their aim is for 209 university students to act as a bridge between their universities and the Climate Change Presidency, contributing to the green transformation through environmental studies and environmental communities at their universities.
